Food shortages, empty shelves in shops, queues for fuel, looks like little has changed from when I was there 30 years ago.

Yeah, post Perestroika Russia. Only, the cars are a bit smarter. This is an unexpected bonus: unlike Trabant's and Lada's - heated rear screens to keep your hands warm when pushing them.

Being allegedly “on the ropes” with the Ukrainians, does not seem like a good time to open up another front?

Perhaps it is for “internal” consumption, ie poke NATO without telling population, but, then report NATO/Polish response as “picking on poor Russia”.

Most likely to be a minor incident to see if NATO are as weak as they think.
Then claim "accident".

We've been here before.
Yawning really grates Putin.
It's plain to see that he is desperate. All he has left is a small stockpile of missiles, drones and propaganda.

An article with something along those lines seems to be a yearly thing, Would be very unwise tough, not only isNato no longer sleeping, Poland is leading the Baltic countries for years now and has a very capable army. Any dispute they might have with the Ukrainians will be quickly set aside the crush Putin if he dares to play their hand.

scantRussian Students being recruited on false promises. Then ending up in the front line. Tragic.

Yep, they'll do anything and if you get the call, you cannot decline on the phone - you have to turn up in person and when you get there, you'll be forced to sign a contract with threats if you don't.

The thing is, the current situation in Russia is unsustainable on so many fronts and with no reliable supplies of fuel in the immediate, the whole country will crumble. If they hang on until winter, it's going to be absolutely dire for them. You cannot wait in a fuel queue for 2 to 3 days in the middle of winter.
Where will the power come for heating systems? How do you keep an army mobilised with fuel shortages? How do you maintain on the ground satellite and drone tracking when you have no fuel for the generator that powers/charges equipment and phones etc?
This is significant because those poor souls will be thrown into the meat grinder where the daily casualties are 1500+ and rising and they have diminishing defences. The ground troops are simply there to absorb drone cost. It's vile. Putin is vile. It's effing horrific when you think about it.
From the end of the very abbreviated training period and deployment, life expectancy is 2 to 3 weeks.

Not a good night last night for Ukraine, even given it's war and ugly. Kyiv took a pounding.

I think the US is actually running out of them due to the Iran conflict.
Anyway, we'll wish the Ukrainians luck. They won't give up no matter what and they head for the underground just like in WW2 London.

For some lighter news: the Russian launched a fuel app where they indicate which Petrol stations have fuel. Ukrainian hackers have infiltrated the app, reversing where there is fuel available and where there isn't causing Russians to drive all over Moscow aimlessley.

Ukrainian cyber warfare units and crowdsourced hackers have launched multiple major operations disrupting Russian fuel apps, payment systems, and fuel cards to exacerbate domestic gasoline shortages. These digital offensives explicitly target the infrastructure used by Russian logistics, military forces, and civilians.

The biggest oil refinery in Russia and indeed one of the biggest in the world - Omsk, some 2500km's from Ukraine was hit. Omsk refines 8% of Russian oil.
