It wasn't a trap at all. It was an attempt to say 'look even someone from The Spectator thinks this, and it's in the Guardian, it must be even more spot on'. So no-one is allowed to argue with this.

No - you immediately posted to intimate that of course this is in the Guardian - in a sense that it would be lefty claptrap. You didn't read the comment and realise that the article was written by the Editor of the Spectator, and in this instance it didn't matter that it was in the Guardian.

Anyway back on subject and the Leader of Her Majesties Loyal Opposition is now subject to a police investigation

"A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said an "assessment" of whether lockdown rule breach had been broken was carried out earlier this year.
They added: "At that time, it was concluded that no offence had been established and therefore no further action would be taken.
"Following the receipt of significant new information over recent days, Durham Constabulary has reviewed that position and now, following the conclusion of the pre-election period, we can confirm that an investigation into potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations relating to this gathering is now being conducted."
He should be ok though, @winjim will point out to them that sometimes he is in 'the lab' but that doesn't mean he is in the lab. Like when Keir Starmer is in an office with Angela Rayner, he doesn't mean he is in an office with Angela Rayner, just that he is an office with Angela Rayner.

"When it emerged Johnson was under police investigation, Starmer called it a “mark of shame” and demanded the prime minister resign.
“Even now he is hiding behind a police investigation into criminality into his home and his office,” Starmer told MPs in January.
“He gleefully treats what should be a mark of shame as a welcome shield, but the British public aren’t fools, they never believed a word of it, they think the PM should do the decent thing and resign.”
“Of course he won’t because he is a man without shame and just as he has done throughout his life, he has damaged everyone and everything around him along the way,” said the Labour leader.
Now that was because the PM was being investigated, not fined. Surely, if we are to believe that Keir Starmer is a man of integrity, honour and honesty, he should resign as he is under exactly the same type of police investigation?

My point was there was no reason to lie, so the denial of Rayner's presence might simply have been an error.
Even if you don't believe that, compare Starmer & Johnson.
Starmer did not attend an illegal event and has since confirmed an incorrect statement was made, and he has publicly made a correction.
Johnson did attend an illegal event (with investigations ongoing into others). The police have confirmed his attendance and Johnson has dropped his defence of "I didn't know" and has paid the fine.
He repeatedly said he had not attended any parties, despite evidence to the contrary. He is a position of far greater responsibility/authority than roughly 68 million other people in this country, he should do better. Far better.
Surely Johnson will correct the record now?

If Starmer is guilty of the same criminality as Johnson then he should go. Johnson was responsible for approving and then flouting the law which he broke so deserves a harsher punishment but we should demand that all senior politicians have high standards if integrity.
As of today we don't know whether Starmer is guilty. I hope the questionnaires are already in the post.
