I would defer to someone from Newcastle to decide what classifies as the North East. I mean, from my perspective, Swindon is in the North East.

Whilst working in Penrith about 40 years ago a local told me "South of Shap's crap". He had a point.

To be fair to Badenoch, Lincolnshire is as far north as Manchester which is in the North. It's just that the domain of "the North" starts on a diagonal. Plus she's from London so thinks everything past Watford Gap is North.

It's also as far south as Cambridgeshire, and next to Nottinghamshire.

But it's not the easy midlands, or east Anglia or the north east.

What is it? Middle east?
