This is an interesting read on the Manchester school librarian who lost her job because books she added to her school library were deemed as safeguarding breaches, including one by Michelle Obama, and a picture-book version of 1984.

Ha, their FB banner "Proud to be GOOD" amuses me, given that 'Good' is only one step up from 'Requires improvement' in old money, and is the equivalent of what used to be called, euphemistically, 'Adequate'.

Academisation is a big scandal waiting to be exposed. There are many aspects to it, from ideological groups gaining control of schools without scrutiny like in this case to the salaries being paid to the "executive" teams.

It was very much an ideological push from the Tories: push Ofsted to declare schools as requiring improvement, the only way out being to 'academise', so that the influence of LEAs could be neutered, and schooling being turned into more of a free market thing.

Yes it always baffles me. I've seen a number of schools advertising their "Good" status.

It might as well be "Neasden School - proud that we aren't yet / are no longer failing"

It started as a good idea - give schools a bit more autonomy. It ended up as a racket with top staff on salaries you wouldn't believe. It turned some schools into private fiefdoms with no brake on what Heads and compliant boards of governors could do (and spend) and how they could treat staff. It definitely is an issue that deserves wider coverage.

Orban booed at his own (final) rally, spewing hatred for Ukraine. It's not even a restrained 'boo' from the crowd, and it obviously rattled Orban.

Do these ratings have any real meaning, when the words to describe them are subverted?

If every school we "good", then, to stand out, a school would have to be "Very Good", when they are all "Very Good", we would have to introduce "very, very good" and so on.

It is the same pointless exercise which gave us "A" level grades of A, A*, and so on.

Also, the same madness which gave us everyone having a degree, it then becomes necessary to have a Masters, or Phd or whatever to stand out from the "crowd".

Quite. It was just as daft when 'Satisfactory' in effect meant 'Not satisfactory'. They want everyone to be above average, and they want to show that educational achievements are relentlessly improving as a result of their endless tinkering.

Who are "they"?

But, in essence, I would agree, same thing in the NHS, endless tinkering and fiddling of waiting times etc to produce fictitious improvements.

Education Dept (DfE). I still remember a Labour education minister in a radio interview bemoaning the fact that so many people were below the average reading age for their age. Well, blow me down, ya dont say!

It is even worse now. After the Headteacher that committed suicide after a poor Ofsted rating, Ofsted vowed to change the rating system and make it less pressured for schools. They have actually introduced more ratings and made the headings even more vague and speculative. My mate is a Primary Headteacher, he said to make matters worse you also get a report card now. If 19 sections are amazing and one is crap, I believe you get rated at the lowest rating, which I would suggest creates more pressure.
