Apparently bars and restaurants are exempt from any sales ban.
And how can they enforce people from drinking stuff they already have at home?

Quite so. I suspect as much as anything it's to alert people to the problems of drinking alcoholic drinks in such hot weather, and the ridicule will help publicise it.

That was certainly me: walked to primary from the age of 5½, and then caught bus no.1 or 88 to secondary. Not least as my parents didn't own a car. Ever.

If only there was some way of making it pay for itself - say by offering almost limitless amounts of energy harvested from sunlight for 20 years at almost no additional cost.

Found this:

It's always easier to invest other people's money. The solar panels would not receive limitless amounts of energy and if it costs a bucket load to build, the investors are unlikely to get a return in 20 years.

From Google:
A commercial solar farm typically takes 5 to 10 years to pay for itself. Once this break-even point is reached, the facility can generate pure profit for the remainder of its 25 to 30+ year lifespan

Ah, interesting. And yes, curious, unless there's a nimby "Oh but it's such a beautiful expanse of water!" resistance.

QE is private. You can't go in to look (which is a shame as I'd really love to take my telescope up there of a night).

Of course - reservoirs vary. Queen Mary (also near me) has a thriving sailing club for example.

Pretty sure infrastructure investment is PP's area of expertise (or is linked to it)

Fair enough - the floating farm next to me cost £6.5 million and has a break even estimate of 7 to 10 years. The next 15 years of the 25 year lifespan are therefore more than going to make up for the cost.

Or Cecil Day Lewis who was chosen ahead of Smith? I suspect a certain degree of bias may have been present amongst those advising back then!

Indeed.

Yes but I am sure the installations are part of a broader strategy. The Chinese don't do things by halves and the us builds thousands of data centres before establishing energy supply.
