I don't doubt he faced challenges - if you ignore all the fanciful stuff he was still a working class black man. Cambridge did him no favours in prioritising his value to them as a diversity poster boy though, to the point where when it started unravelling it was a situation beyond saving.

So am I correct, in my reading of your posts, that you blame Cambridge, and their apparent embracing of DEI, more for the tragic circumstances leading to the hounding (and it was definitely not just normal investigation by the press) and suicide of Arday, rather than those in the media who used this case for their own political agendas?

She also poured loads of her own money into a books scheme for children. I imagine she's set that up to be a major legacy after her death, as she seemed to be really passionate about it for over thirty years.

I'm really sad to read that. What an amazing legacy to leave though - both her music and her book charity work. I always found it incredible that she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day.

I'd be interested to know which quotes are racist. Actual quotes, not stuff you've chosen to interpret that way. Should be easy to find.

If you leave aside the allegations about plagiarism and employment history, much of the other stuff is just bullsh*tting, things he likely said off the cuff not knowing it would come back to bite him. It could well have been explained as such and if they had dealt with it seriously early on those aspects could have been nipped in the bud. My feeling is that he was so high profile and so lauded they didn't want to address it. He wasn't a young man but he would have benefitted from better support and guidance from Cambridge. What he got was unqualified, unquestioning support - that isn't always best thing. He had so many high profile people calling every aspect of the case racist that even attempting to admit his errors or explain them became an impossibility. As I said previously, he was left with no off ramp.

Yep, she's asked for donations for her book charity in lieu of flowers for her funeral. Let's hope the leagacy has been structured in a way that it can carry on doing the good work even without her input. I imagine that her royalties and investments are considerable.

I'm sure it will. She was pretty business savvy, and is one of the few giants in music who seems to have managed to escape being ripped off by managers, publishers, or accountants. If I recall correctly, Col Tom Parker wanted Elvis to record I Will Always Love You but demanded Elvis get a writing credit and therefore a % of all future royalties. Although it was detrimental to her career at the time she refused because she wanted to retain ownership of her own work.

Her Glastonbury set was epic. She's one of the few people I would have paid top dollar to see.

Tangentially, one of our sons made a dark joke on social media. My wife said that it was inappropriate but funny. They both got piled on.
