One of the things that could go in the 'trivially annoying (or whatever)' thread is friends on FB doing the 'heavenly birthdays' thing. No, they are dead. Remember them dearly in your thoughts, if that's your thing, but let's not pretend they can eat heavenly jelly and ice cream on what was their birthday.

Whatever afterlife Freddie is in, I doubt it's what most people would consider "heavenly".

OK, a bit niche, but crocodiles have hatched without extra heating in the Drôme department, at a crocodile farm. Hoping they don't make into the river and breed there, as it would make splashing around in the river a little more interesting than at present, where it's currently just 'vipers' one needs to look out for.

At my parents in Galicia there is an olive tree and a couple of palm trees.

I don't remember the olive tree ever flowering properly, as the weather was never warm enough for long enough when I lived there, I left 1998. Now the olives grow to normal size, and my brother said that last year there were some ripe ones by the end of September.

Same with the palm trees. They are now producing fruit with viable seeds, as we ha found several saplings growing in the area. These trees needed special care to survive winter just 20 years ago.

Indeed. The change is so fast, and your experience there demonstrates what an enormous shift will happen in forestry, on an epic scale, whether people like it or not. I suspect a lot of the change will happen through fire, rather than planned intervention.

Incidentally, someone put this postcard on FB of here from about 1900 before that era's reforestation: it has been an extraordinarily successful project (my pre-fire photo from 2020 for comparison), which all of a sudden is looking extremely fragile, thanks to the incendiary potential in this warmer climate of the Austrian pines that have filled all available bare slopes.

We had similar near here, just down the road from where my daughter lives, a couple of weeks ago. Two rival biker gangs had a pitched battle in the street and one got killed. They then crashed a van into several cars escaping. The road was closed for a week afterwards for investigations and about 25 people have been arrested with the oldest being 73. Didn’t even realise biker gangs were still a thing and thought ‘bikers’ were generally dentists and accountants having a midlife crisis.
