Even in the 1970s I can remember the coal lorry regularly coming round in the winter to our suburban cul-de-sac, doing good business with coal for domestic heating (including at my parents' house, before they had gas fires installed).

The small town I grew up in sits in hollow and held smog in winter at a frightening rate because of coal .
