Breaking news? This was 2014!

Oops then. Sorry, missed it at the time, obviously. Still a moral dilemma though.

A very interesting moral question in a court case about a rape accusation and the press's freedom to report the allegation.

I think it sets a pretty poor precedent if claiming you might kill yourself is a good defence.

The papers must know their story is water tight, otherwise they would be sued to the max.

Exposing sexual offenders often brings forward other unrelated victims who can corroborate a story.

Is that an aptronym?

Or a 'euonym'.
Nah, just good old nominative determinism.

Ha, interestingly, 'euonym' started out as the early frontrunner, then 'nominative determinism' outstripped the other two.

Most people would probably be able to work out what nominative determinism means.
where as I wouldn’t know what the other two mean without looking it up.

I guessed Pross's, but had never heard that, nor the other one I found. ND has been knocking round media as a humorous thing more, as the Ngram shows, not least as the phrase kind of explains itself, so people remember it more easily, and so are more likely to spot the phenomenon it labels.

I think it's hoping that the Jason Arday case evokes sympathy but yes it would be a worrying precedent. If there's to be no investigative reporting without charges there would be many incidents and reports on individuals that wouldn't have seen the light of day, including Saville. His identity was reported in Legal News feeds in August so it would be hard to argue that his name isn't already in the public domain.
