What better way to commemorate the end of WW2 in Europe than to let people spend another 2 hours in the pub getting tanked up?

EU Cheese & Meat Ban
Travellers have not been allowed to bring back items such as cured meat and cheese, including in sandwiches, since Saturday due to the growing outbreak on the continent. The restrictions apply regardless of whether the goods are packed or packaged, or bought from duty free.

It follows an earlier ban of similar products from Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria after rising cases of the cattle disease in those countries.

The restrictions apply to people arriving in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man. Products will be seized and destroyed if people try to bring them in, and in "serious cases" people could be fined up to £5,000.
I wasn't even asked on arrival back in the UK on Friday after a trip to see Paris - Roubaix.

I had taken the precautions of stashing the saucissons and fromage in the spare wheel well and stashing Mrs Celine's gorgonzola smelling trainers in the roofbox as a diversion.

Like all the 'taking back control' nonsense there is no one to actually enforce any restrictions.

I would agree, there is seldom anyone there to enforce the rules. However, I did have an amusing (to me) encounter with officialdom, some years ago. Returning from a trip (Portugal I think it was), in our MX5, we were pulled out the boarding line, at Calais, and, car searched. The operator, told us they were looking for smuggled dogs. Quite where they thought we were going to hide a dog, in an MX5 was not explained. 😂

Some years ago, our car was searched on leaving the UK; Felixstowe IIRC. Which was an odd experience.
Whilst Mrs B and I were not personally searched, our Golf was rummaged by C&E staff while in the queueing line. I presume a similar car had been flagged up, hence the stop.

I went through Calais, one week after the Festina affair. Bike box got opened and all my clothing that I had used to cushion the bike box got spread out all over the concrete in front of a coach load of waiting passengers. They went through every item of clothing and all my belongings.
This process meant the coach was delayed and we had to get the next ferry.
Boy was I popular

Stopped at Dover and asked if I had any forbidden goods, especially flowers. Opened the boot and the customs guy picked up the bouquette for my mother, rooted around and said, "nothing here."

It will actually be quite interesting how Trumpists react, given the short shrift Pope Francis gave them. I assume they'll start suggesting that they need to pick someone more in line with their world view. It's a pity a black lesbian won't be in the running.
