But an effective troll will also occasionally post vaguely sane stuff to draw people back in: it's like Russian (or any other) disinfo strategies - they have to put enough stuff in there to keep people thinking there's at least something in good faith, whereas the vaguely believable stuff is there just to keep engagement.

TBH, most of the time I don't know what megamagatroll posts, but assume he's been up to something when threads go all non-sequitury, or people feel the need to state that bears do shît in the wood.

And I understand where both you and @briantrumpet are coming from.

Like I said, I don't directly quote or respond but there are times when the posts deserve a response.

I don't think that's feeding, it's the only version of actual moderation we have on here.

The best moderation is ignoring him entirely, and he'll get bored... he'll keep on ramping up the craziness of what he posts to the point where he self-destructs (aka gives up bothering). It's just attention seeking, and just one reply recharges his batteries.

It's partially true, that's fair, but NCAP seems to deal with obvious trolls much worse than BR did {and why I started that thread), and it spoils this place somewhat, as there is otherwise an interesting mix of voices.

Very true. Quite a shock it persiste so determinedly.

Early days after joining I spent time refuting the twaddle but did learn it's a futile exercise and the forum is much more interesting with the "ignore" function. If more used it it would give up after a bit - shouting at thin air as interesting as daytime TV.
