I'm not sure that's true. They are definitely not popular with a certain type of person who "thinks they should go back to where they came from. The country's full innit".

Any evidence for this?

Again, making stuff up because it's what you think - doesn't work.
https://togetherwithrefugees.org.uk/welcoming-growth-press-release/#:~:text=The net benefit to the, within the current asylum system.

Yes, you could argue that this study is likely to be biased towards refugees, but every study that has looked at refugees / asylum seekers has fully debunked the "they came here for benefits" myth propagated by Farage, Robinson, Daily Mail et al.

You only have to apply a small modicum of thought to realise that someone spending the remainder of their family savings and travelling for thousands of miles under dangerous conditions with risk of death, is more likely to want to learn skills / get work to establish themselves in order to improve things for themselves and their family. Many refugees are skilled - spending money on training / retraining / English skills has a far higher return on investment than effectively imprisoning people for 6 months to a year whilst giving them handouts.

A quick google around asylum seekers strain oocal councils or similar will show what you need to know, but maybe don't want to know. Here are a couple of examples:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-66084878
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politic...eker-bill-leaves-tory-council-in-17m-deficit/

As for your last post, another quick google will show that the pay level at which someone becomes a net contributor to the exchequer is around £50k pa. Do you really think that most of these people are going to walk into jobs that make them higher rate tax payers?

And as for you point about making the effort to get here, if you apply a modicum of thought you might ask yourself why they didn't stop in one of the lies multiple safe countries that they passed through on the way? If their priority really is safety and security then they would have done that, but most have made a choice, likely because they think we are a soft touch. Sorry, but beggars can't be choosers.

Best not to get your information from comics. Al the BBC article highlights is that Kent either needs more funding, or not enough is being done to share the load across different counties.

£41k and of course not. You don't have to be a net contributor to contribute.
  • A report from the Commission on the Integration of Refugees suggested Britain's coffers could be boosted by £1.2 billion within five years if refugees were granted the right to work.
  • A GOV.UK news story highlighted that skilled refugees were contributing nearly £1 million annually in income tax and national insurance through pilot schemes.
  • A Public and Commercial Services Union report projected that by expediting the asylum process to six months, refugees could be self-sufficient sooner, leading to a net contribution to the public purse.

Back on the racist myths I see.
The asylum seekers coming here, come here because:
  • They speak some English. Not French, German, Spanish, Catalan, Polish, Russian etc. They want an English speaking country.
  • Their uncle / auntie / neighbour/ cousin/ dad's friends sister etc are already here. People like to go where they know some people.

Back to the commesibles one ought to like, regardless of genetics.... There are people on another thread talking about beer. This is a community arguably worse that whisky whisperers.

"Have you tried Bishops Toe Jam, Derek?"

"I'm more of an Old Mother's Teat sort of a chap, Nigel."

"Yes, that's nice and yeasty."

How should we judge Samuel Pepys and other historical figures?
He was a well known womaniser who frequently used prostitutes, so not a great role model, but few are from those times.
One school is thinking of cancelling him from their inter house system. But are still happy to use Cromwell, and killing the king is arguably worse?

Depends on your definition of "contribute". Unless you have put in more than you have taken out, your have not been contributing overall, in IMHO.

It's about a collective though surely. Minimum wage earners are individually not contributing much in the way of income tax, but collectively they are earning and spending billions. Surely that is a major contribution to the economy, plus the contribution of doing a lot of jobs that underpin our society.
