Apologies for the lingua frenchie, but the Swiss authorities have charged the managers of the bar with homicide, amongst other things.

Think that's pretty standard practice on the continent whilst they investigate further

Difficult to comment of the Swiss tragedy as every situation is different and much then comes down to specifics but for me it's been about keep struggling as the moment you accept it as "over" it is over.
Imagine 50 people trying to escape fire+smoke through a very narrow exit.

A lot more will survive if they calmly walk through, taking turns, without pushing-n-shoving, than if everyone fights/struggles.

But the ones at the back will stand less chance.

If only there was a way of having a rational discussion on the best approach while actually in such an emergency.

Actually, in many scenarios the ones at the back are better off behaving politely. If there is 100% panic, then they probably won't be able to get through the scrum anyway. (There are horrible videos out there of this being acted out, if you don't believe me)

I am not arguing that they are not better off staying calm, just asking how you get that point through in a very short timescale to a lot of people in a cramped space aiming for a narrow exit with flames and smoke and injured and screaming people all around?

Oh, I think I see now; well I wasn't addressing that - I was addressing the previous poster saying that he(she?) would fight/struggle until the end; I'm saying his approach would be sub-optimal.

(I wish people would ask me about what I've actually posted, when they quote me; Don't invent some other issue for me to fix! )

When I said ":...but for me it's been about keep struggling as the moment you accept it as "over" it is over." I did not mean I'd be barging and fighting, just I would be continuing to try and get through the situation rather than resigning myself to the circumstances.

I was also referring to a specific situation in my experience where barging from the back was not relevant (hence "... but for me it's been ..." nb I didn't use the word ":fight" but you can fight a situation without fighting against people.

Can I just say that this thread is starting sound a bit like a chat about why so many Liverpool fans entered the leppings lane end when they could see how busy it was.

I'm not going to comment on people's reactions when in such an extreme situation that no-one can really be mentally prepared for. My only real interest will be in whether one escape route from a basement bar where there will be drunk people had been passed as being safe, and how the bar managers allowed the situation to arise, even if it had been passed as nominally safe.

Is it OK to find this quite funny?

https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/05/h...sites-live-on-stage-during-hacker-conference/

A hacktivist remotely wiped three white supremacist websites live onstage during their talk at a hacker conference last week, with the sites yet to return online.

The pseudonymous hacker, who goes by Martha Root — dressed as Pink Ranger from the Power Rangers — deleted the servers of WhiteDate, WhiteChild, and WhiteDeal in real time at the end of a talk at the annual Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Germany.

The hacker said that they scraped WhiteDate’s public data and found “poor cybersecurity hygiene that would make even your grandma’s AOL account blush.” Root said that users’ images included precise geolocation metadata that “practically hands out home addresses with a side of awkward selfies.”

“Imagine calling yourselves the ‘master race’ but forgetting to secure your own website — maybe try mastering to host WordPress before world domination,” Root wrote.

The leaked data includes users’ profiles with name, pictures, description, age, location (both containing precise coordinates and user-set country and state), gender, language, race, and other personal information that users uploaded. Root wrote on the site that “for now” there are no emails, passwords, or private conversations.

According to the leaked data, WhiteData had more than 6,500 users, of which 86% men and 14% women. “A gender ratio that makes the Smurf village look like a feminist utopia,” Root wrote.
