Haha, this makes me laugh...

Firstly, "Wow, what a swing!!"

Then the actual number of voters:

The low turnout is what makes me laugh about the fake anger at the delayed council elections.
The turnout is alway rubbish. No
One cares about local elections, yet suddenly they get delayed for a short while and people are up in arms.

My worry is will they ever happen? Norfolk meant to happen in 2025 but postponed until 2026. Now instead of 2026 postponed until 2027. Democracy? "You can always vote them out" (except when you can't)

Report on C4 News last night about a massive illegal waste site that over the last year has caused nearby school to shut, local residents children to move out, massive rat infestations in nearby houses. And sited on land owned by the King and it is the responsibility of the landowner (in this case the King) to pay for the cleanup and yet our King is refusing, trying to pass the costs onto taxpayers. nb Duchy of Lancashire pays no tax.

Highlights how we are no more than a source of their increasing wealth. Honour legal commitments, nah, costs to the public, profits to the Royal Family.

I thiunk link to the report but these days C4 dislike (and block) VPNs (for privacy) https://www.channel4.com/news/uks-w...s-on-site-belonging-to-private-estate-of-king

I'm only half a mile away, but thankfully somewhat higher, and with a better drainage system (the River Exe) nearer.

Might go that way this afternoon to gawp, but not to try to cross. That said, when the tide goes out (it is very tidal here), it might subside fairly rapidly.

I don't know that it has peaked yet. This evenings high tide might coincide with more of what is coming off the hills.

Quite possibly, though the Clyst isn't terribly long, so not sure how long the lag is between raining in the slopes of the Clyst and reaching Toppers.

Are you under water today Brian? This is allegedly near Topsham.

Is that not just a part of the river floodplain? I'm always amazed when news outlets send reporters to show flooded fields that have a function to flood after heavy rain as though everyone should be amazed (or in the case of a park / municpal golf club near me, the Reform councillor getting all frothy at the mouth that 'something must be done' whilst being a member of a Party that considers climate change a con).

Isn’t the big question “how is an illegal tip, or such magnitude, allowed to persist for months, with the authorities apparently impotent?”. Forgetting the land owners potential costs, what about the environmental damage a public nuisance?

I agree. Two questions fairly independent of each other.

From locals perspective urgent issue is getting it cleared. From taxpayers perspective is why they should be expected to pay when legally the King is liable for the bill.

Who pays the bill is important step to getting it cleaned-up as nobody will start cleaning it until they know who is going to pay. Legally landowner pays but King is refusing and trying to pass it off onto Council and public/taxpayers to pay. So it's apparently "in-limbo" whilst who is going to pay is resolved.

The report said how the site had been repeatedly reported yet Gov. agencies repeatedly failed to act so seperate question is how ourGovernment Agencies are so frequently failing to act. Same applies to many of these illegal dumps - they are massive, operated for extended period of time and were repeatedly reported but our Government agencies just failed (again).

And, if the Government can retrospectively change the terms of previously agreed contracts, why can't they just change the terms of many of the rip-off PFI contracts the Government agreed to?

It feels a bit different changing a law on a contract to which you are a party. Who would be prepared to undertake government contracts if the government could simply change the law to suit them at a future date?
