Sky News need a slap in the face. The two, yes *two* Israelis were "killed", while a mere 400 Lebanese people, getting second billing were simply "left dead". I simply don't understand how any news source can justify this.

Far better than the every death in Gaza was a child, filmed, the resurrected, only to die in another film clip. So on so on

Amazing that this doesn't seem to have damaged Central Station next door. That said, it's going to be as traumatic to Glasgow as the destruction of the Royal Clarence Hotel was to Exeter - I just hope that Glasgow doesn't take as long to deal with the aftermath.

I was in Exeter at the time of that fire ten years ago (It wasn't me Guv!). How far off is the completion of the rebuild?

At least it's at last being rebuilt into (posh) apartments now by a very good local firm. It's been a litany of shameful stuff (not least the original owner running off with the insurance money), and has been an eyesore in Cathedral Close for way too long.

To be honest, it's remarkable that the whole of 'St Martin's Island' didn't burn down that night and in the following days: it's the last remaining block of medieval buildings in Exeter, mostly full of ancient timbers and with lots of hidden cavities.

If anyone's interested enough, here's a video of a meeting I went to hosted by a local historian, and including a presentation by the developers.

It is a shame, but I am fairly sure that the facade will eventually have a modern building behind it.

Fortunately, the upper level platforms are quite a long way to the south of the block that Central Station occupies, and the station has several other entrances (the Union St. one is bound to be closed indefinitely though). It is one of the grandest stations in the country, so something of a blessing that it is largely unharmed.

If you're referencing the Royal Clarence - yes, that is exactly what is happening, but within the plans they will be retaining bits which actually show that the fire happened. Nooko have already done similar to other buildings in Exeter, recycling materials where they can (e.g. oak floorboards into furniture) and making features of retained historic bits (it's worth Googling Paternoster House Exeter, which they've done). The owners seem to be both slightly mad/idealistic but also hard-headed business people: they explained why to make the RC rebuilding economic, they had to add a floor on top, but have set it back so it won't be visible from ground level. They actually live in and around Exeter, so they know that their lives would be hell if they screw up such an iconic building.

I'll be interesting what they do in Glasgow... with even the facade gone, I suspect it'll be a fancy new build from scratch, there being nothing salvageable.
