There's hypocrisy, rank hypocrisy, then there's this...
In an ideal world they would all be above average.

Education Dept (DfE). I still remember a Labour education minister in a radio interview bemoaning the fact that so many people were below the average reading age for their age. Well, blow me down, ya dont say!
Half the people are always below average. That. Is. A. Disgrace.
Well, it depends on how wide your bands are for 'average'.

The whole thing is a massive con: more expensive bigger cars, longer loans, and you get sucked into the quasi-perma loan that you never pay off because you trade the car in to get the next new one on a new loan. It's a house of cards, ready to tumble down.
Quite happy to stick to my 23-y-o Almera that cost me £700 to buy.

I always work on my Dad's advice, the only thing you should buy on credit is a house. Everything else you pay cash, and if you don't have the cash then you can't afford it!

@Pblakeney is of the same mould, I suspect (maybe my long-lost twin brother born in a different place and to a different mother, which is probably why I lost him).
I think it's been one of the biggest cons out. When I started driving, only posh people had swanky new cars, and everyone else drove bangers, or really basic cars – my gran could easily have afforded a better car, but Austin 1100s and then 1300s were fine.
I have followed that rule. Anyone who pays £700 pcm for a car is financially illiterate.
I have never bought a new car and I’ve been driving over 30 years.
