Two muscian guests staying chez moi. Apart from a visit to the market, salad lunch on my balcony, afternoon rehearsal in the cathedral, an hour cooling off in the river, a quick clairette at the Café de Paris, and à pleasant three course meal at le Rendez-vous, we've just been lazing around, avoiding NCAP. Obvs.

Yeah, still not right, and taking longer than hoped. More drugs and cardioversion to come, but on the plus side two two other unrelated things they were following came back "not cancerous", which would put a spring in my step if that didn't make me out of puff.
One of the consultants I'm dealing with (someone I know personally too) said that the most likely reason for having an MRI scan is... that you've had another MRI scan. They tend to find stuff, which they can't ignore, but finding yourself directed to the oncology unit for one kinda brings you up a bit short.

Is the common view on here that there was nothing amiss in the Jason Arday story at all? Or simply that it was given excessive media coverage? I didn't follow it as it unfolded but it does seem that there were aspects of it that merited investigation. It's a tragic outcome but I think he was ill served by Cambridge, and some vociferous supporters, until the point where there was no professional off ramp.

For me there were some issues about Arday's claims and appointment that warranted some investigation, but no more than probably many other academics who have been quietly shunted aside when similar issues were raised in the past.
The difference, in my mind, was that there were some elements of the media who saw an opportunity to attack "wokism" at Cambridge in his appointment and a pile-on, totally out of proportion to the circumstances, took place.
As an example, I believe the Daily Mail had a front page and several full pages about Arday a day or two before his death, yet the day after his death was reported they just did a small item inside the paper saying that he had died.
It is possible that Cambridge did not do all they could in their duty of care for an employee who was under severe pressure, but it was the media who totally went overboard with the issue to push an agenda.

Thinking aloud ie no specific knowledge of the dismissal but it might be that Ghent University decided they wanted rid of him because of the pile-on but to have used that path might have required warnings, formal warnings, written warnings, review boards, etc. whereas they found they could bypass all that using errors in his appointment.
I assume from the University perspective the priority was to sever their association and maybe they just used the fastest means to achieve that.
