Im quite familiar with the Grammar schools in Kent/ SE London. The pushy middle class white parent now has to compete with the pushy migrant parent. Tutoring is big business around here to get kids into the best schools.
The sad thing is that working class white kids have been squeezed out, but that is because education is under valued in that part of society, and they can’t or won’t spend money on tutoring so are being out gunned by people who will.

There's not much chance of passing a grammar school entrance exam without tutoring or at the very least a state school (or private one) that prepares kids for the exam. All it does is push up house prices in good primary catchment areas. I don't think it's necessarily that the white working class don't value education, more that there are now enough affluent ethnic minority families who can afford certain catchment areas and exam tutors whereas before it was mostly middle class white families.
Anyway, none of it is really a good advert for grammar schools, which 70 years ago were seen in part as a way of giving working class kids a chance at an academic education and a route to university, but are now a question of who can afford to live where and who has at least £30 a week to spare for a tutor, plus Kumon classes or whatever. Bit depressing really.

My child got into one of the most competitive co-educational schools on the basis of familiarity with Watership Down plus a fantastic no-notation music audition.

There's a heck of a lot more to education than the 11 plus.

And I nailed the 11 plus and went to the local comprehensive.

We had half-size classes in Arts and Crafts. Good idea.

Nuffield Science! Whatever happened to...

anyone know what Goodwin’s point is?
Is he suggesting that White pupils are stupid and incapable of gaining places at Grammar schools.
These schools have always been supported by the right wing, as being the places where the best pupils can attend on merit.

I would suggest that it shows many immigrants are highly motivated, which has to be a good thing.

It's just rage bait, nothing more.

The MPC meet this morning to decide on the BoE Base Rate.
Fingers crossed they understand that the inflationary pressures are supply side driven and increasing interest rates to choke off demand would be a really dumb decision, harming the economy at a time when we need growth.
If the inflation was demand driven, then fine, increase rates, but it isn't. The inflationary pressures are due to the stupidity of Trump and the warmongering of Putin.

It's not going to reduce the futures on ketchup that Trump's own appointed bloke raised the base rate in the US.

A hammer seems to be the only tool they have though. They seem lost in a world where inflation and interest rates aren't automatically linked.

I suspect that part of their problem is not only inflation (from issues beyond their control) but also wage growth which is high and will feed inflation. Delay and allow wage growth to feed into inflation and it gets a lot harder to bring inflation back down later.

My impression is if base rate not increased this then it will happen next month.
