Words aren't. Sorry.

I think language, and all communication really, relies on a sort of contract between the parties involved. There needs to be an assumption that each person involved is attempting to communicate and to understand. Language is imperfect but it's what we have.

Of course there are situations where this doesn't apply, mostly legal and academic I suppose, but that's why we have glossaries. We don't all want to turn into Jordan Peterson, do we?

Words aren't. Sorry.

What are words worth?
What are words worth? Words
Words in papers, words in books
Words on TV, words for crooks
Words of comfort, words of peace
Words to make the fighting cease
Words to tell you what to do
Words are working hard for you
Eat your words but don't go hungry
Words have always nearly hung me
What are words worth?
What are words worth? Words
Words of nuance, words of skill
And words of romance are a thrill
Words are stupid, words are fun
Words can put you on the run
Mots pressez, mots sensez
Mots qui disent la vit?
Mots maudits, mots mentis
Mots qui manquent le fruit d'ésprit
What are words worth?
What are words worth? Words
Its a rap race, with a fast pace
Concrete words, abstract words
Crazy words and lying words
Hazy words and dying words
Words of faith, tell me straight
Rare words and swear words
Good words and bad words
What are words worth?
What are words worth? Words
What are words worth?
What are words worth? Words
Words can make you pay and pay
Four-letter words I cannot say
Panty, toilet, dirty devil
Words are trouble, words are subtle
Words of anger, words of hate
Words over here, words out there
In the air and everywhere
Words of wisdom, words of strife
Words that write the book I like
Words won't find a right solution
To the planet Earth's pollution
Say the right word, make a million
Words are like a certain person
Who can't say what they mean
Don't mean what they say
A rap rap here and a rap rap there
Here rap, there rap
Everywhere a rap rap
Rap it up for the common good
Let us enlist the neighborhood
It's okay, I've over stood
This is a wordy rapping hood, okay, bye
What are words worth?

Reading around the chip

Deux chevaux? Dau geffyl. 'Horse' is masculine in both languages, but (I believe) neuter in Unkraut-land, and only in French can two horses have four wheels instead of eight legs. The number two mutates everything in Welsh. I don't know what this proves but it must be disconcerting for some of our members.

I know what you mean, by the way, but wasn't sure why there were two.

Saying "I love you"
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say but if you only knew
How easy, it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do
If my heart was torn in two?
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say
If I took those words away?
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying "I love you"
La-di-da, da-di-da
Di-dai-dai-da
More than words
La-di-da, da-di-da
Now that I've tried to
Talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close, don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do
If my heart was torn in two?
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say

If you don’t know what you’ve written I certainly can’t be bothered to go looking for specific posts to quote. I have neither the patience nor the tolerance that @mudsticks displays.

Show me where I've mentioned wanting to live in France, people aren't usually shy of quoting others on here.

Words aren't (grounded in material reality). Sorry.

You say you can talk about language all day long. Yet your responses are stuff like this that add nothing to the discussion.

You seem to prefer Humpty Dumpty to Winnie the Pooh.. 'Words mean whatever I want them to mean'.

Which is literally true. Dictionaries merely reflect (with a small time-lag) current usage (for obvious examples see 'sick', 'bad', etc.). Also...

They don't change material reality though. Gravity existed before there was a word for it. There are 2 distinct sexes and that remains so, regardless of how a small minority insist on trying to expand the definition. And I would hardly say that a definition of 'woman' which includes men is currently in common usage.

Winjim didn't really answer it, but perhaps you will, Ian. Should there be a word that uniquely describes the 50% of the population that we currently call women? Because your chosen definition potentially includes everybody.

Also, is it just women who are not allowed an exclusive name for themselves? Or is it other groups too?

No-one has the power to define how people use language. You have your definitions, other people may define things differently. You or I have no control over that. You can explain your views, but you can't force others to agree with you. That's the way the world works.

Very true.

But, isn't that true of every topic?

Once again you ignore the fact that they've made exactly the same change to their listing of the word 'man'. Also, I know you don't like it, but the prefix 'cis' does exist and is in use.
