Apparently it's better to plot against Heathrow! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgmjyk2z2y8o

Nine Just Stop Oil (JSO) activists who were convicted of plotting to cause "unprecedented disruption" by gluing themselves to a runway at Heathrow Airport have been spared jail terms.

Weird, we are fully aware of thge devastating impact climate change will have on the world, we know and understand the cause, we have the technology needed to address the problem, we can afford costs of addressin the problem but we (the world) continue to do nowehere near enough. What does that say about the human species?
Planned AI datacentre in England could cause five times emissions of big airport
A vast new datacentre to feed Britain’s rising demand for artificial intelligence could cause more greenhouse gas emissions than five international airports.

Elsham datacentre in Lincolnshire is on course to cost £10bn and its 15 power-hungry computer warehouses are projected to release five times the carbon dioxide of Birmingham airport, including from take-offs and landings.

Documents estimate the datacentre would consume 3.7bn kWh of energy, with annual CO2 emissions of 857,254 tonnes when running at full tilt. This is based on the current mix of energy sources powering the National Grid.

So the calculation is a bit flawed.

It could relatively easily be powered by renewable energy whereas planes can't.

What would everybody else be using? National Grid are way behind the curve even if we do get to construct more renewables.

I agree planes can't. We need to address the many different causes of Climate Change.

And, given the damage we've already done and how much more we still intend to do "net zero" isn't enough, we'll be needing "net negative ".

NESO have drafted a report for Miliband detailing how to decarbonise the grid by 2030. The plan isn't realistic as it was a response to a naive new government asking how to meet their manifesto. Nonetheless, it's a decent plan to decarbonise by 2035.

Or to put it another way, there is a massive amount of renewable energy and nuclear power that will connect to the grid in the next 10 years, and it will cover a data centre.

Once the grid is decarbonised the next step is the harder stuff including carbon sequestration.

It’s going to be ok. Arnie is on the case…
