I'm amazed that people are so begrudging of allowing NHS workers to have a bank holiday.

It's only an issue because a one off Bank Holiday has been given at very short notice. In BAU mode appointments are not booked on Bank Holidays. Previous one offs going back as far as Princess Anne's wedding in 1973 had a few months notice.

Hopefully, if we get one for the Coronation, it'll be promulgated well in advance.

Pity poor Queenie couldn't predict her demise and give the moaning tw*ts a bit more notice, I would wager there's more people grateful of an extra day off as there isn't.

I'm sure there's a poll somewhere to disprove my theory but there you go.

I did consider writing to the Palace (perhaps in black, spidery script, with a leaky pen) to ask them to move the date of the funeral, but then I decided it was more amusing to vent my mild grumpiness here. I feel more cheerful already.

Not quite. They do seem to have managed things badly.

Personally I think they'd have been better off offering staff double time if they are willing to work, and then warn guests that depending on staffing, some activities and facilities may be closed. Focus on staffing to allow arrivals / departures / cleaning. By offering double time, you facilitate those staff who need things like childcare to be able to work.

The company made 66 million profit last year, they can afford double time for one day.

They are. It's a bank holiday, so bank holiday Ts&Cs apply. Lab staff for example get a day in lieu.

But I'm not going in to work. Can you guess why? Partly because I don't need to but also, schools are closed and someone's got to look after my kids. You may want to have an NHS functioning as if it's a normal weekday but without childcare, public transport, catering, etc for staff and patients it can't be done. It's either a bank holiday or its not, you can't have a weird sort of halfway house.

I will mention that to daughter No4. No doubt she will be able to levitate to work, if there is no public transport

My partner has watched funerals on live streams...during covid when she couldn't get home to Ireland to attend.
I'm pretty sure they stream mass also.

Yes, I can confirm that, they are still doing it. It is usually my task to find the stream and set it going for Mrs @BoldonLad. Sometimes they are pre-recorded, sometimes live streams. We also had a funeral during Covid lockdown (a niece, aged 40), that ws live streamed too.

Reading around the chip
Just seen Yvette Cooper interviewed by Krishnan GM on C4 News. Cooper pouring forth a stream of brain-dissolving ideological bilge about 'our forever queen', GM distinguishing himself amongst an otherwise supine commentariat by at least raising questions about class, democracy and monarchy that Cooper didn't answer but simply incorporated into her grovelling word-gruel. I think this incarnation of the Labour Party is the worst ever, and it's not an accolade I bestow lightly.

I don't know what to say. If she's unhappy with her working conditions then maybe she should contact a trade union. But in a general sense, essential services notwithstanding, NHS workers deserve a bank holiday break as much as Center Parcs staff or anyone else for that matter.
