I don't know what to say. If she's unhappy with her working conditions then maybe she should contact a trade union. But in a general sense, essential services notwithstanding, NHS workers deserve a bank holiday break as much as Center Parcs staff or anyone else for that matter.

I didn't say Daughter No4 was dissatisfied, why would she want to contact her union (she is a union member).

Maybe more constructive if those working in the NHS recognised that it is, or should be, a 24/7 operation.

I can only speak from a laboratory point of view but you do get that we have an on call service right? But not all samples are urgent and require same day turnaround. So bank holiday we'll be providing a service for urgent acute biochemistry but not for GPs or clinics (there won't be any), nor for specialist biochemistry. That stuff can wait and in any case mostly has turnaround times measured in weeks rather than hours. But there will be a BMS (or two) in the lab and a clinical biochemist available by phone. As it's a bank holiday they will be compensated appropriately.

In the rare but not unprecedented circumstance that we are required to run an urgent specialist assay there are procedures in place to cover that.

OK, jolly good. But the discussion wasn't about only the Laboratory was it?, it was about appointments/procedures/being cancelled.

And you seem to be blaming NHS staff for that and suggesting that the entire NHS be running full tilt 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

No. Not blaming anyone.

That is profoundly magnificent.

I'm concerned about the nation's health here. There's a queue of three MILES waiting to see a box! A woman interviewed on the radio on Monday was in seventh place in the queue which she expected to be in for more than SIXTY HOURS to see the lying in state thing for a few seconds! Some of these people are certifiable lunatics and it's disturbing to see some of the more extreme examples. WTAF is going on? Seriously!

It's a religion and some people feel they need to perform the ritual. And like other religions, I have my opinions, especially regarding the figures at the top but it's a personal thing and people should be free, within reason, to practise as they see fit.

I don't feel it myself but it's obviously important to a lot of people. I had a pre-schooler session with the 3yo at the local church yesterday so I had a peek at their book of condolence and there was nearly a whole page filled out already.
