Conservative Chair of the London Assembly manhandled out of the Tory conference - by a GMP Chief Inspector, no less - for muttering in disagreement during Braverman’s speech. No doubt Starmer will now feel the need to post snipers round his auditorium, just so @multitool can take him seriously.

but it still doesn’t look like a police matter.

Those present include the prime minister and, presumably, most of the cabinet.

This automatically raises the security stakes from plod's point of view - remember Brighton.

Compare that to a Labour or Lib Dem conference where those present only amount to opposition MPs who are relatively expendable.

Did the IRA have accreditation for the conference in Brighton? Everyone here would have entered via a metal detector arch, police search and dog teams will have cleared the venue in advance, and this misguided Tory appears to have remained seated and civil throughout.

So no, this should not be seen as having crossed the threshold for police involvement. Besides, I thought your Tories wanted the police to go after poor criminals, not people that say unwelcome things.

Did he ever pass a death sentence?

Not sure the timings work out for him to have been in a position to do so...

I think you're right (it's a very long time since I read him, or about him). I think as a barrister he prosecuted one or two who were hanged.

See, that's where you misunderstood, Braverman is not concerned about freedom of speech, Braverman is concerned about her freedom of speech.

^^^ basically sums-up much of the current 'mindset' within the Tory party leadership....

"Today, institutions fundamental to the British system of Government are under attack
the public schools, the house of Lords, the Church of England, the holy institution of Marriage, even our magnificent police force are no longer safe from those who would undermine our society, and it's about time we said 'enough is enough' and saw a return to the traditional British values of discipline, obedience, morality and freedom.
What we want is
Freedom from the reds and the blacks and the criminals
Prostitutes, pansies and punks
Football hooligans, juvenile delinquents
Lesbians and left wing scum
Freedom from the niggers and the Pakis and the unions
Freedom from the Gipsies and the Jews
Freedom from leftwing layabouts and liberals
Freedom from the likes of you"

TRB 1978

T'was ever thus....
