The Americas didn’t exist (except to the indigenous populations) until Columbus discovered it, or, possibly a bit earlier when some vikings found it. 😊

It has always existed, just not known to the erm 'civilised' world till around Columbus

When did humans start claiming land?

As soon as they learned how to use rocks to bash in the brains of the tribe the other side of the stream, I guess. I'm no anthropologist but I expect it precedes structured language & having names for places.

We ain't evolved much.
