The "banana boat" saying is/was widely used on Tyneside, but, merely to mean a bit dim or unsophisticated, not with any racial overtones that I am aware of, unless of course, I have just got off a banana boat 😂

(As for the Tyne, i'm already looking forward to jumping off the bridge at Featherstone. Yippeeeeeee...

if I heard that, I'd guess it was related to "I didn't float up the Lagan in a bubble"

It is the "banana boat" bit which is common, not the "Clyde". No idea where the phrase was used first, but, since the Tyne is, or at least was, once a busy Port, there is an obvious connection with arriving on a boat (banana or not).

Yes they are paid to attend. GPS phone data indicates the vast majority have been to many other Harris rallies from all over the country. These are not local democrats coming to a rally. The number attending were greatly inflated too

In the days when I worked, one of my work colleagues had sailed on a banana boat (as crew) apparently, the science of preventing bananas from spoiling is quite complex.

A now deceased Great Aunt of mine was very friendly with the original main members of the Van Geest family who, in the early 1950's began importing bananas, initially from some of the smaller islands of the West Indies. By the 1960's the company had broken grip on the banana market previously held be Fyffes.
The 1950's and 1960's are of course associated with the early migrations to the UK from the Caribean and elsewhere.
