As I understand it, Republicans are in a bit of a bind with this.
Under Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, the Obamacare/Affordable Care subsidies were to continue until the end of 2025. But in order to fund the tax cuts for the wealthy, Trump's budget, doesn't make any provision to extend the subsidies beyond 2025. Health insurance companies know this, hence why estimated costs for renewal have increased sharply for the forthcoming year.
The Congressional Budget Office said 4m Americans are likely to become uninsured as as result of the increased costs, with this figure rising to 17m within 6 - 7 years.
The situation isn't any better for those on low income using the government funded Medicaid. Trump has cut almost $1tn from the Medicaid budget over the next 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office reckons 11.8m Americans will lose their Medicaid coverage

Yes, the figures get banded about and they are all estimates but what is not mentioned very often is the number of hospitals that have closed down completely. A lot of them in rural red states. These closures have accelerated since 2005 but there will be many more in the coming months/years as a direct result of cuts.

A point Maher himself made (except for the bit about ratings). To me it was about the importance of talking to people you don't agree with.

Talking to people you don't agree with can be fine and useful, as world leaders have been trying to do with Trump (better to do that than just leave him to Putin), but they aren't making TV programmes saying how charming he is. Epstein was also obviously very charming too, but I hope that Maher wouldn't do 12 minutes trying to say he was really a nice person when in private.

I'd rather listen to the testimony of all the people who have actually worked with Trump, especially the ones in his first administration, who thought that they could save the US from his worst impulses and harness his 'charm'. A lot of them are now being targeted by DoJ out of pure spite, because they dared criticise him when they realised he had no moral boundaries whatsoever. Charming indeed.

Meanwhile, this kind of thing is going to be a real vote winner...

My curiosity was piqued as by chance I had seen bits recently about big bills even with insurance. I then came across this.
It would appear that even paying $2,300 per month, Bubba's Dad's bronze plan is only going to pay 60% of the medical bills.
Furthermore, there are 10 pages of drugs that are not covered. But the rider at the top of the page means this list is not comprehensive.

Just had a play with Florda Blue. Assuming no healthcare coverage from working, a family of 4 with a household income of $150000 would pay $938.16 a month after tax credits, $50 for every PCP visit and have a combined medical and drug deductible of $7,500 per person - so the first $7500 of any treatment you have to pay.

I can't believe that any sort of insurance company would be complete bunch of utter shysters.

FWIW, this article articulates my view pretty well:

https://www.theframelab.org/how-donald-trump-rolled-bill-maher/

After dining with Donald Trump at the White House recently, Bill Maher went on his HBO show to deliver what he framed as a balanced, honest, no-BS report. What Maher delivered, instead, was a stunning example of how easily millionaire celebrities get seduced by the soft glow of power — and end up reinforcing dangerous narratives.

Let’s be clear: Donald Trump rolled Bill Maher.

After the dinner — arranged by MAGA musician Kid Rock — Maher found himself swooning over Trump. Maher insisted he hasn't converted to the MAGA cult, but he spent several minutes downplaying Trump’s authoritarianism while reframing Trump’s critics as the real problem.

In Maher's telling, the president known for shattering democratic norms and defying the law is simply a misunderstood guy who laughs at Maher's jokes. But it’s political theater — and Maher got played.

I'm not sure if this is a suggestion or a warning, but I'd not put it past Trump. If he can demolish part of the building without warning and illegally, what's to stop him?
