From the BBC website:

"Greenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations," the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark said in a joint statement.

Yeahbut, when push comes to shove?
There is a very distinct likelihood that the US is just testing the resolve before deciding what to do but they have to be taken very seriously.

Pretty much everything Trump 'floats', even 'jokingly', seems to be actioned sooner or later.

You are looking at the situation through old lenses.
Trump wants Greenland, he is going to take charge of Greenland. The only question is how will he achieve it?
I think understanding why can help assess the risk of something happening. If Trump had genuine national security concerns it's a bigger risk than if it's just ego. Part of that comes from the support he'll get from his base eg make a case to the US electorate about national security will make anything more acceptable that it just being massaging the ego of an unpopular leader. Similarly with professional US military internally saying "what's the point, doesn't help us".

Going to go down well with the US electorate when they are struggling with the cost of living, struggling to pay for medical care, etc.
Trump suggests US taxpayers could reimburse oil firms for Venezuela investment
Donald Trump has suggested US taxpayers could reimburse energy companies for repairing Venezuelan infrastructure for extracting and shipping oil.

Trump acknowledged that “a lot of money” would need to be spent to increase oil production in Venezuela after US forces ousted its leader, Nicolás Maduro, but suggested his government could pay oil companies to do the work.
And from the same article more showing how Trūmp is just making stuff up on the spur of the moment, talking lies and twaddle.
The three biggest US oil companies – Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips and Chevron – have not yet had any conversations with the administration about Maduro’s removal, Reuters reported. This contradicted Trump’s statements over the weekend that he had already held meetings with “all” the US oil companies, before and since Maduro was seized.

“Nobody in those three companies has had conversations with the White House about operating in Venezuela, pre-removal or post-removal to this point,” one of the sources told Reuters.

The Mangoed Narcissist, attacks a sovereign country, despite his bone spurs, kidnaps their head of state and his wife, etc., etc. ....

...and now, suddenly, nobody talking about the Epstein files, ..... who'd have thunk?!

On my list of priorities, Epstein is way down near the bottom. Sure it’s a problem and one he wants to go away so it’s succeeded at that level. For now. The USAnians will bring it back once all the ra ra ra novelty has worn off.

It is not about ego, and it is not about national security.
It is about national and personal interest. Greed.

I agree it went qunt quite but reported today which might "wake-up" the issue (maybe)
US justice department has released less than 1% of Epstein files, filing reveals
The Department of Justice has released less than 1% of the so-called Epstein files, a court filing has revealed, as Democrats step up criticism of the Trump administration’s “lawlessness” for keeping records under seal.

The department conceded that only 12,285 documents, totalling 125,575 pages, relating to the disgraced financier and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein have been published to date, despite a federal law requiring the vast majority to be released by 19 December.

You do know Biden increased the bounty on capturing Maduro to $25million dollars.

Trump should receive that reward, put it towards the ballroom

Are you really that stupid...no don't answer that.

There are two issues: the kidnapping of Maduro and the plans to run the country and profit from its oil reserves.

By your definition I'm probably a leftie loon and I think the first is bad enough, but the second takes it to a new level of international illegality, and I am sure that Biden did not want to do that.

According to an "expert" I have just heard on the BBC, its certainly not about National Security.

USA has a military base on Greenland already and can send as many personnel there as they want in accordance with a 70+ year agreement. They also have a further 17 "dormant" bases on Greenland that they can re-establish under the same agreement as well as having agreement with Denmark to place military there.

Greenland is also aware of it's wealth of mineral resources and has been trying to do deals with US (and Chinese) companies to sell the minerals/extraction rights etc. for years. The problem here being the difficulty in extracting these minerals in the harsh conditions of Greenland, not sovereignty.

Top and bottom of the situation is that he (they) wants to be one of the few US Presidents who have added land to the USA.

Turns out that creating a 51st state is somewhat complex, and more complex than invading and declaring somewhere to be America.

One thing that seems to be needed by implication is a state constitution, and for that the be approved locally.

Let's ignore that because there is hardly anyone living in Greenland, and besides, they all support being American overwheamingly. If they dont, they can have a bit of the south to live on. Let's call it a "reservation" and give them free university tution or something like that. They can learn English and adopt US customs. This has worked well in the past.

Another thing that would be needed is a majority vote in both houses of Congress.

You would think that the implications of destroying NATO and irrevocably destroying relations with the EU might give at least some Democrats pause for thought.
