It is. I'm not being entirely facetious about implying that this is symptomatic of why the US is weird. That article says that a roundabout reduces the risk of accidents by 80%, but I guess that, even with that knowledge, they think that it's still not worth investing in roundabouts.

I was once told, by a colleague who was a traffic engineer, that roundabouts (particularly mini-roundabouts) do not reduce the rate of accidents, but, they reduce the speed of accidents, just reducing damage and injury. No idea if that is true or not.

Accident stats are usually taken only as person injury accidents and recording of damage only is a lot more limited and most of those rear-shunt collisions on the approaches won't get recorded. Cyclists and motorcyclists are more vulnerable at roundabouts though. Mini roundabouts are only supposed to be used to replace an existing junction these days and not as a new junction.
