The US used to be ashamed of cold-blooded murder. Even in the Vietnam war it used to bring people to trial and convict them. Okay it was all a bit tokenistic and the vast majority of American atrocity went under the wire, but at least nominally America was committed to legality. But that's all gone now. - Trump orders warning signs outside the Smithsonian. President Trump signed an order Friday directing that “warning” signage be placed outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to alert visitors to what he calls “inaccurate information presented in the Museum.” He directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to work with the National Park Service to install the temporary signage along the NPS maintained sidewalks and walkways the public uses to reach the museum. The signs are meant to inform visitors of a July 4 White House report and to direct them toward what Trump calls “locations and resources for accurate information regarding America’s history.” He also tasked Burgum, OMB Director Russell Vought, the GSA administrator, and the assistant to the president for domestic policy with using “all available authorities” to carry out the order. The move marks an escalation from simply pressuring the museum’s content to physically labeling it as untrustworthy at its entrance.
- The order builds on more than a year of pressure campaigns. It follows a scathing White House report released July 4 that claimed the museum “cannot be trusted to tell America’s story honestly and in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.” In Friday’s order, Trump wrote that Smithsonian leadership treats American history as a “prime tool” for advancing social justice and what he called the “radical transformation” of society rather than presenting it as shared national inheritance. That language echoes an executive order Trump signed in March 2025 targeting federal funding for programs he described as presenting “divisive narratives” and “improper ideology.” Trump wrote that both the institution’s leadership and the museum’s leadership “cannot be trusted to tell America’s story with honesty and gratitude.” Together, the orders show a sustained, escalating effort to reshape how the Smithsonian presents US history, moving from funding threats to public signage.
- The Smithsonian is pushing back on the characterization. The institution declined to comment on Friday’s signage order specifically, but Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch had already defended the museum’s work earlier this month in response to the July 4 report. Bunch wrote in an email to NBC News that the White House report “is not a fair characterization of the work and totality of the National Museum of American History.” He said the museum’s work is driven by scholarship, accuracy, and “an uncompromising commitment to tell the fullness of America’s story.” Bunch added that the institution remains focused on what grounds it, namely a steadfast commitment to scholarship, nonpartisanship, independence, accuracy, and integrity. The dispute leaves the Smithsonian defending its editorial independence against a White House now moving to publicly contest its exhibits at the museum’s own front door.

The other thing that suddenly comes back to me (I muse on things in the woods, then forget them) is the way Trump is not actually trying to achieve the status enjoyed by kings. No, sod that. He's going all out for the status of a pre-Magna Carta king - ie, a king from the days when a king was a real king and got to do exactly what he wanted with no interference from spoilsports of any description.
