"Aims" is as slippery a word as 'aspiration'. It'll all depend on how awkward the EU want to be, given they'll set the terms, should we ever get that far.

Given we left their club I expect them to be a touch spiteful.

IIRC somewhere it's stated that acceding countries "should commit to joining the Euro", but that the formulation could leave wiggle room for how long the process takes (which is open-ended, not specified.)

"Yes Minister, we can definitely 'Commit' to joining the Euro and 'aim' for monetary Union just as we can 'Commit' to giving all pigs a luxury 5 star stye and 'aim' to use trotters as currency. There is nothing in the agreement about actually 'doing' anything - we just need to make the right noises and everyone is happy. The EU will be happy that we have said we will aim and commit, the UK is happy that we have made some empty promises, and everyone knows that none of it will ever happen."

Same here. I'm guessing by your lack of repy to my question that yours is as well.

Anyway, who cares what the evidence is, as we're not rejoining anyway?

Not even I think we could do that even if we wanted to. I reckon that alone is a deal breaker for the electorate.

I found a benefit, at least for me…

If we had stayed in the EU I wouldn’t have been arsed to sort out dual nationality as I wouldn’t have really needed it. Anyway, we left and my new passport turned up today.

I’d still rather be in and would vote that way if the chance ever arises.

I’m not sentimental about the £. Use the euro quite a lot.

Sentimentality may play a part for some, but for me at least it's more about having control of our own currency and being able to set interest rates that suit the UK, for example.
