Also, might be in their economic interests to have a slick easy system rather than ongoing "massive delays" headlines pushing holidaymakers to look elsewhere as that tourism helps their economies. But not for us (in the UK) to tell them (in the EU) what is and is not in their interests.

Well, I guess that they were slightly persuaded by the "massive delays" to suspend it, and they will have to reflect on the administrative data 'hole' in the system each time they do it, and whether that is worth their upgrading/improving the system, or whether to ride it out despite the data holes, if they have to suspend it from time to time.

At the same time, there might be an element of "Well, you voted for strong borders", along with a French shrug, as Britons sit in queues, and pay for data roaming once they are in France. I can't really blame them for not being overly fussed about our discomfort.

When did this begin? 😉

These widespread delays will harm the tourism in Europe, and it isn't just impacting UK nationals, it's a balls up for all third countries.
Poeple have missed return flights due to the delays.
The various parts of the system clearly don't communicate properly.

And even if we had stayed in the EU, this was coming with the EITAS (?) which is the visa that is due to come in for all non-Schengen countries, which should have been this autumn, but is likely to now be 2028.

ICE→ border delays→ lower tourism →Trump is an idiot

New system → border delays →lower tourism → what fools the Brits are!

Also, I think a Schengen visa isn't all that compared to the rest of the world.

Almost tempted to go for the breadth of opinion.

I've smoked out one of the EU ultras on Bluesky, who seem to exist to slap down even the tiniest bit of pragmatism. I'd suggested that the queues and subsequent suspension of EES at Dover was a failure of the system and sufficiently robust modelling, and was entirely predictable. It's not good for the EU to suspend EES, as people in Schengen are now are outside of the system. I'd suggested a mechanism for allowing registration away from the border and at times when people aren't actually crossing the border could have made the system more robust, to everyone's benefit. Nope, apparently terminals *must* be overseen by border guards!!

Seems that, no, she's happy for the system to break down, as it would really piss off UK travellers to the point they'd give up. Not serious.

To be fair, there is a difference though between a new system being implemented that causes delays and lower tourism, and delays/lower tourism being caused because people fear getting arrested in your country if they look 'different' or say something on social media your leader doesn't like!

Assuming you have an British passport if we would travel to europe together, i would go to the "EU passpoort que" which means i scan the thing go trough the bag check and done. You as a brit would go the the foreign passport line with all kinds of extra checks you need to pay for the european tourist visa (it has a fancy name but i forgot) and you will probably will be out in a hour and a half after me and then have to do you bagcheck.

I mean there are lots of things wrong with the EU but Shengen is one of the few things that really work nicely.

New systems whether it's borders, grandma's new sewing machine or new green tea do not have to result in delays, the UK could have gotten much better out of Brexit, the problem is Skill issues, we simply don't have many politicians with any/the correct skills. I mean if you get people like Farage on this side of the water Wilders in the Netherlands and AfD in Germany as serious contenders (in the recent past, potential future or currently) it must be clear to anyone something is wrong. Or an clearer example, someone whos biggest skill is going bankrupt and pretending it's all part of the game becoming president of the USA
