Anyway, I think I can see a flashing light behind me, so should let it pass...

If you've never heard a proper Devon accent though, it's a thing of wonder, which is fast dying out. I've been in the middle of conversations like this, and that chortle behind it is almost universal... I have a theory that the accent developed around telling a jolly good yarn about how hard things were, but trying to get a laugh out of it. Five minutes of pure joy for me.

I can only imagine a conversation between them and some Aberdeenshire farmers speaking the Doric.
Sure there is a clip out there but may take a while to find. couldn't find the one I had in mind. This'll do.

Actually, there are precious few recordings of proper Devon just by itself, which is why that one is so precious for me - most of the people I've met who spoke like that are dead now, with their children having much milder accents. And you won't be surprised that the reason they retained such strong accents is that they rarely travelled far (probably only as far as Exeter or Okehampton for a cattle market), and didn't do holidays. There's one I knew, a rotund 5'6", waistband up round his nipples, hands the size of shovels, and still lived in the farmhouse he'd grown up in, still with his brother. Probably still living off 5/6 a week.

Seems it's genuine, but from a couple of years ago...

Ah I see. Will be interesting to see if he is still making such claims in light of current events.

Interestingly, all the warmongers on the right who are calling for the UK to support Israel/US seem to have overlooked the fact that wars create refugees. If memory serves me right, Iranian nationals are one of the largest cohorts seeking Asylum in the UK (and largest cohorts found on boat crossings). Oh the irony of a war they cheered for having the potential to bring more refugees to our shores! Something tells me they have conveniently forgotten this potential issue.

Come on now. That would imply that there might be consequences...

But then they do love to FAFO.
