The BBC trend of lack of balance continues. It really needed a reference to what drivers get in comparison so as to avoid being seen as joining the populist bandwagon.

As far as I can see, that is all in Japan?, unless Nissan have declared the area around their factory in Sunderland to be Japanese territory, I don’t think it will affect me. 😊

How is that a lack of balance?

The BBC article has factually reported on an event in Japan.

Would you prefer the BBC censor its content to ignore all stories with any connection to cycling or all stories related to Japan, or its it stories about laws you object to

I'm struggling to see the lack of balance

The lack of balance is not left v right but motor vehicles v cyclists.

The only thing about Japanese roads that I know is that they drive on the left. The BBC article tells us that cyclists can now be jailed for mobile phone use. Is there the same penalty for motorists? One person has been killed by a phone using cyclist. How many were killed by phone using motorists?

That is not bias.

The BBC are reporting on a new law.

Do you expect every BBC article on AA law in Japan to quote every other law in existence to avoid any accusation of bias?

Also remember Dog bites man is not news, but Man bites dog is

Every country has laws controlling lots that motorists do, but a law like this is not common

Alcoholics Anonymous? Automobile Association? I'm not sure what relevance either of those institutions have to this topic.

I would expect the BBC to "inform, educate, entertain." The article linked by @albion only satisfies the first of those principles.

Others may prefer to remain in blissful ignorance and use that as a lazy excuse for fence sitting.

Predictive text strikes again. Was supposed to say " a law "

I'm not sure news output is supposed to entertain.

It does educate most people who read it who were not experts on Japan's legal system

Yes, plenty of facts. But they all appear to support the need for the new law. Almost like a BBC hack had just cut and paste from a press release.

Does this law include using a mobile for navigation?
Are Garmin big enough in Japan to influence the government? Maybe @Milzy will have some insight into this.

Haha I’d say if the mobile is fixed to the bike and not in hand it will be fine. Garmin have no chance to influence their government I’m afraid.

I’m seeing many BSO pavement so called cyclists using their phones in hand riding along. It’s getting more common for certain. Matter of time until they run into a child or OAP.
