A US trade deal was supposed to be one of the big gains from Brexit. The EU had, after many hard yards of negotiation, secured a draft Transatlantic Trade and Investment Protocol (TTIP), with the US but it fell to domestic political opposition in the 27.

The leave campaign, and Johnson well into his Premiership, assured us that such a thing was not only doable but available.

We now know that was not the case.
