It seems they still are. This group of 100 cyclists, went through France, Italy, Croatia, Albania to Greece and not a problem (apart from picking up a vomiting bug.

I suspect that once they were in France, assuming that was their port of entry to the EU then they're in the single market. France to Italy is Schengen. Most Schengen borders are similar to England/Scotland with few if any formal controls.

Albania might have added some spice as it's non EU.

Exactly. The cyclists that experienced the customs problem were the group on the charity ride that sent their bikes separately by ferry into an EU country as luggage while they flew to Santander to collect them. Those that travelled with their bikes did not have any problems.

I suspect the ThighsofSteel group travelled across the Channel on the ferry with their bikes.
