Our friends have a house near Perpignan which we used to visit, flying into Girona and driving across the border between Spain and France. It was interesting to see the border infrastructure gradually fade away. First time we went IIRC there may have still been a barrier across the road, albeit an open one. That changed to just some small buildings and a layby, then a couple of vans, now there's nothing there at all.

However do countries manage with so little sovereignty? They must be in economic and social chaos.

Whilst there is some worth that wind turbines etc can be deemed unsightly, so are roads, houses and aeroplanes.

I think there might still be a sign with 'Le France' written on one side and 'España' on the other. Seems to work.
