There's a big old bridge carrying the road through the mountains just on the French side, I guess you could lob it off that.

What about going the other way?

What struck me again this autumn as we wandered pretty regularly, between France and Spain, was how different so many aspects of life really were, including prices, regulations, food, culture etc .

It's almost as if these countries have quite comfortably retained their own way of doing things, whilst also benefitting from FOM 🤔

.. I'm just old enough to remember the mountain border posts having lift up barriers and passport checks.

Kind of exciting when you're a kid - stern looking, stiff uniformed, moustachioed types glaring into the car...

"Oh no are they going confiscate my stuffed toy elephant ??? 😟"

But must have been a real ballache for day to day grown up life.

That part of France considers itself Catalan so you've got that identity as well which crosses over the national border. You see the flags of Catalonia, France and EU all over the place, I don't know too much about the local politics and you do get a bit of Catalan nationalist graffiti particularly on the Spanish side but by and large in the tourist areas they seem comfortable and proud of this triple identity.

I don't really get the same vibe when I see a St George's cross although obviously I bring my own biases with me.

Similarly in the Basque country, they seem to be able to be proud of their identity and culture without seeming to need to hate the EU..

Bafflement at brexit generally abounded.

Still I guess all these impressions garnered must be tempered by the fact that the kind of people who will interact with forriners in any meaningful way are possibly of a certain 'sort' so it's not the whole picture, I get that.

Yes, we really enjoyed the freedom to wander, all across the EU, without the tedium of border crossings, money exchange etc. It is all so civilised. Given the obsession with "the war" in some quarters of the UK, I am always particularly impressed with the freedom of the French/German border.

Well exactly, it's as if some countries can learn from past conflicts, and choose to grow up, and change how they operate.

Not just use it as a grindingly drear, xenophobic stick with which to beat others. ...

Thought that benefit had been taken away from you since Brexit?

Nobody predicted this, surely?

A great example of the absolute farkwittery that is Brexit and British exceptionalism. This of course all part of the likes of Moggs great push to scrap perfectly good regulations and spaff millions coming-up with happier British ones.
We've become a nation sinking under the weight of Brexit ideology....

Yup ,
'Project fear'
Turned out to be boring old truth telling - it was in fact just

'Project Reality'

So much harm done, with nothing to show for it..

But you really mustn't call brexit fans farkwits, because that's offensive OK?
