I'm now unsure about the meaning of "desperate". I can see how a pensioner living in a mould ridden rented flat with mobilitry difficulties pending a 2 year overdue hip operation unable to heat and eat might be considered "desperate". I dunno, he's got enough wealth to see out his days living in a mansion, eating takeaway pizza for every meal, masturbating and playing video games. And isn't that all any of us can really hope for?
