I’m not a big fan of Whitney Houstan style melisma. When overdone it sounds like the singer can’t hold a note.
I suppose that when technique (either lack of it, or weirdness of it) takes your attention away from the message behind the notes & words, then it's a problem - maybe not for everyone (that depends on the listener to a large degree), but I think that that's where I am with Dylan. I just get no pleasure from the sound of Dylan's voice, and so I can't get past it to the musical/lyrical ideas behind it.
