I remember when I lived in France and discovered that strawberries actually have a taste (unlike the "bouncing strawberries" in the UK).

Ian

The strawbs are 10€ a kilo, but are indeed gert lush. Pudding of choice, with fromage blanc. Gotta eat 'em while they're in season. August will be peaches, nectarines and melons. It's tough, but someone's gotta do it.

Well, yes.

I do remember those bottle of milk. And breaking the foil cap with a straw. It was an odd ritual, looking back.

Straws hadn't been invented when I was a kid. We drank straight from the bottle

Without reading the post, when I saw that DAAS embed I just assumed it would be The Lost Works Of Gilbert & Sullivan, or that one they did about dogs. They are profoundly appropriate to the level of this place, and I would urge everyone to seek them out.

It still feels wrong when I'm at the French house to be using water that's better quality than bottled mineral water (it's straight from an underground aquifer beneath a limestone plateau, just UV-treated) for doing the washing. When I was first here, I didn't realise, and occasionally bought bottled water to drink (well, it's what you do in France), then realised I was being an idiot.

Still the laundry's done, and it's going out to dry in the sun and gentle breeze, while I go for a ride after a salad lunch in the garden.

Brilliant group. Onlyseen them on video, never live. Earlier stuff a lot better than more recent.

Ian

Went to see them at Huddersfield Town Hall a couple of years ago, they were great. More recently went to see the Grand old Uke of York at Nunnington Hall, a more local vibe but again great.

Not sure this qualifies as banter but I remember there was a discussion on BR about sourdough and its health benefits vs processed bread. I went into my local independent bakery today to buy a sourdough loaf. Hadn't been in a while and found a loaf is now £7.75!! I wouldn't even expect to pay this in London.

Not bread, but, was visiting one of grandson's (14yo) a few days ago. He disappeared off for a hair cut. Came back looking exactly the same to me, but, £35 lighter.

Almost as shocking as your £7.75 loaf.

I think he may need a pocket money increase 🙂

For those of a certain age, the milk in 1/3pt bottles at school was nearly always warm by the time it got to us children. Maybe that's why a certain prime minister (allegedly) stopped it, to save us from room-temperature milk. Blessing in disguise (and obviously no politics here).

Best milk is the stuff I used to drink by the gallon from the farm bulk milk tank - chilled to 4C within seconds of coming out of the cows. I kept a stock of Weetabix there for extra breakfasts, but a pint of the freshest cold milk on a hot day is bliss.

We used to volunteer to be "milk monitors", which involved carrying a crate (or two, there were over 40 kids in our primary school classes) of milk to the classroom, then, taking back the crate(s) with empties after "play time". We got to drink any left over/unwanted bottles. Some days I must have drunk 6 1/3rd pint bottles, limited only by the possibility of vomiting. 😂

Don't recall if straws were available, we certainly never used them.

I wonder if 'footage' will live on as a language fossil for video. It's quite fun asking young people about stuff like that. (I've had one or two interesting ones when youngsters haven't realised where 'flid' comes from.) I remember doing an audio recording for BBC Bristol when I was in my teens, and the editing was still on magnetic tape, and splices were exactly that, using scalpel blades to cut the tape and sticky tape to hold it together afterwards.

In other news, I must admit I quite liked having the OMeB (old man's e-bike) for the ride out to see friends this morning... it was a proper vicious headwind, and if I'd not been looking after my heart with the OMeB, I'd have probably done a much shorter ride in a different direction.

I've got at least a couple of rides along old unpaved tracks I want to do on it before the end of the week, joining up between roads I know like the back of my hand. So while I hate the weight of the thing (I think it's about half my bodyweight) and miss the 'whoosh' of the road bike, it's does a sensible job well. I can see why they are so popular.
