BTW, it was a most excellent day at Calstock, even if I didn't take a diversion for a coffee. The people who are in Ferry Farm are friends of my Tavistock friends, so might call in there for coffee next time. I was in Calstock for just a couple of hours yesterday, but with a decent stroll around, reckon 4 hours would be nice on a good day.

The coffee shop there is excellent. Or it's about 45 mins walk thought the woods to Cotehepe Quay. In summer the ferry comes becl the other way also. There's another national trust coffee shop at Cotehele.

Another option is up into the Danescombe woods, and try to find remnants of the incline railway. Or various other old mine buildings.

For a placewith not a lot going on there is quite a lot to explore.

I should visit at some point.

Thanks. Yup, definitely worth a day there, with several paths and things to explore. I can see why it's popular, and imagine it's vital to the train service's viability.

I was of the understanding that "soccer" was the public school equivalent of "rugger".

Association Football being both the original form and a predominantly working class game, "soccer" was the lesser used term.

For whatever reason in the US rugby was the main import (Celtic immigrants perhaps), which morphed via impatience to allow one forward pass into (American) football, with the term "soccer" being used to distinguish the game that school girls and the entire rest of the world play.

And rugger is the public school version of rugby, watched by the Henries at Twickers.

Haha. That's funny. I'm going to a barbecue on Saturday, and have been offered a lift by someone who lives just around the corner. I just know him as a neighbour. Just Googled him, and find out he's a much-lauded authority on diabetes research, is a CBE, and won the GlaxoSmithKline Prize, amongst others.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, knowing someone for years as a neighbour, without knowing anything about an eminent back-history?

Definitely outgunned today at the barbecue - apart from my chauffeur, there was a theoretical physicist, two mathematicians, an engineer, a retired Vice Chancellor, and a couple of other Very Clever People. At some point they chatted about how Einstein himself never wrote "E=mc^2", but I managed to get the conversation back to Count Basie, so I could feel slightly less ignorant.

But, more to the point, the barbecue was excellent, and not a cheaty one done with a gas. Real fire = real man. Or something.

Well, more than one was keen to watch the soccer footie Association football this evening, and the radio was on in the car on the way back to get the live coverage of two groups of grown-ups kicking a ball around, whatever the game is called. I hope they had enough coats to make the goals, given how warm the weather was again.
