At what point did you think than any noise emanating from Farage's mouth was "thought through"?
Plenty of what Fagash spouts is thought through.
However, the thought is often how to gain votes, support, or money.

My daughters work in a pub under a zero hours contract (student job). There's no overtime, and the only day that there's any kind of extra pay is Christmas day. The other workers that are full time are under the same conditions. From what my daughters say of their friends in other pub chains or retail the situation is the same. I've heard that among supermarkets only Lidl and Aldi pay overtime.
Regarding care jobs, the situation is mixed. I know people who get overtime and people who work under similar conditions to zero hours contracts.
So part time workers won’t qualify and nor will anyone on a salary.
And what happens at the margin of £75k?
I don’t think anyone has thought this through.

Ha, the brass neck. Farage makes up some guff about being hacked by Russians to try to deflect from the £5mn bung, then suddenly the press can't ask questions about the claim, because it's 'private'. Nope, sorry, it's not, Danny. Your man made it public.

Am I missing something here, even if it was a hack and leak (which clearly it was not), the gift was still given so why would that even matter? I get this is all done to distract, but as a distraction it feels pointless as it does not detract from the actual fact of the £5million.
so, that's a "No" then.
I think it's a sign of panic, as this is definitely a blunder (for the reasons you mention) which gives more media stuff to get their teeth into. I think he thought it might be a good way to pretend the Russians don't like him, as well as being a distraction, but at once it doesn't alter the evidence of the £5mn, draws attention to it (Streisand Effect), and draws the security services into it (they'll want to see evidence, if it exists). Tangled webs, and all that.
Yes, all feels very badly thought out in a blind panic. As you say, it is also now likely to increase scrutiny on to the £5million even more, rather than deflect attention away, which I assume was the intended outcome.
