Also, the increasing number of websites that insist you accept cookies to view the site. I didn’t think that was legal, it also can’t be good for site traffic and hence advertising revenue either.

If it's something I really want to read and it's like that, I'll try it in incognito mode, and if it won't play ball, give up.

Some of the US websites obviously try to get round it by giving sooooo many things to un-check for 'legitimate interest' ('legitimate'? yeah, right!) that you'll end up just accepting them all as the easy option. Grrrr too.

Yep, they’re annoying too especially when they ‘hide’ some after a load of text

Unsure about law but I see no reason they can't place requirements to access their content. Some sites get upset by my ad-blocker and require their ads be allowed to success - their site their choice and I go elsewhere.

Install a 2nd browser and set it to clear all cookies on exit or clear with cron job eg I use Safari but also have Firefox and only use Firefox for such sites and they can't track 'cos everything cleared very regularly and most sites in Safari anyway.

Might think about trying the DuckDuckGo browser for that as an experiment.

It looks like the ‘accept cookies or pay’ is a bit of a grey area under GDPR regs in both the UK and EU but the consensus is that it isn’t legal.

I use DuckDuckGo but only through "bangs" as I find their results inferior to Google.

But using "bangs" allows me to direct my search bypassing search engines when appropriate. eg want to know about a place and I'll "!w Southampton" and it will redirect to Wikipedia. Can be a useful way to get to Google in the right country as I run through a VPN eg "!guk ee phone codes" will divert the search to Google UK. But the destination of the divert still serves you directly ie not routed through DuckDuckGo so limited but fewer searches through search engines and more direct to desired target.

But using a shared IP through a VPN and changing server frequently means they can't get anything from trying to track you because what they are tracking is maybe 5% you and then only for a short time.

When faced with similar I enter address details for local Council Offices (now unoccupied), but they can call 01234 567 890 if they are so inclined and owning my own domains I have unlimited e-mail addresses I can receive or SPAM or just discard on, And those are used fairly frequently.

Ian

That's a good one. I should just use my brother's address, because I really don't like him.

I doubt many online sites would post anything given how much even posting a letter costs these days, particularly if they have an e-mail and they are online aware enough to have a website asking for this stuff.

I suppose, it could have been shortened to "First World problems" 😂

My daughter has just flown out to do a job in North America.

She wasn't happy, there were no pyjamas for the sleep over, being it was business class from a lesser know airline. First World, first class travel problems

It's not long and rambling because it condenses what used to be threw thread titles of between 6 and 8 words into one 11 word title. You really should be thanking me for my conciseness.

With half a serious hat on (or a half serious hat) and half a social media hat, I'd have probably gone for "Seemingly trivial things..." to draw your target audience in. Call it clickbait if you want...

Still, it's a good thread to have here, where I can get away with furrin words without official chastisement.
