Seemingly trivial things that elicit an emotional response of some kind

It's massively overused these days. Been watching 'Mary J Blige at the BBC' recently. It makes you even more in awe of her and similar old school singers who don't use it and those from the past who didn't need any assistance to sound amazing.

I can honestly say that I've never once heard an out-of-tune note from Ella Fitzgerald, for instance. I genuinely think she physically was unable to sing out of tune, whilst being able to sing 'blue notes' just right (i.e. not in equal temperament).

While we're on a musical theme I'll say that I am annoyed by the use of pitch correction on singing. To me much of the emotion and expression of the best singers lies in their ability to vary their pitch and timing.

Oh god yes. Autotune is the devil's work and no mistake. My kids like Glee - I was recommended to watch it as well, but I cannot bear the overproduced fully autotuned songs. They literally have no soul.

Maybe just the echo machine in it bit sounds like some electronics going on "helping" her.

True. I think that apart from being incredibly technically talented anyway, such singers know which material works with their voices. Nowadays autotune and other tech encourages singers who have ok voices to perform material that's really beyond their capabilities. Ariana Grande has put out some banging tunes but I don't believe for a minute she can sing the Wicked score without technical assistance. Cynthia Erivo probably could.

In popular music it's never really been just about the quality of the voice or musicianship, but autotune and overproduction mean it's less so than ever. Boy/girl bands probably being the best example.

I love Cher. She could definitely sing back in the day but yeah Life After Love made that effect an easy mainstream get out in the production booth.

Having said that, I remember watching Live Aid and realising how many of the lead vocalists relied on their producers, even back then, to make their voices into something bearable. For most of them, 'pitch variation' wasn't an artistic choice, just happened to be what came out on the day.

To be fair, singing live is much harder in a rock or pop band than it is in a studio or rehearsal room, particularly in those days before sealed wax earplugs. The ambient sound would have been awful, and it can be really hard to hear what you are doing because of the sound levels. The tendency is to shout and oversing.

Probably just as well I don't have to prove my identity with Companies House then, as I too would have no idea, other than 'a long time ago'. It followed having current accounts with Barclays, Natwest, Lloyds, Midland and Santander till I ended up with Nationwide, who so far have neither pissed me off nor screwed anything up, as all the others did.

Having made it nearly 53 years without seeing a red squirrel I was just sat in a hide in some quiet woods watching the tree tops for one (saw a pair of greater spotted woodpeckers which was a first) when I sensed movement to my right and something ran past on the rail within half a metre of me. After recovering from the shock I saw it was the elusive squirrel. Response - joy

(I’ve now seen six or seven in the past hour and am starting to downgrade them to pests 😂)

I saw a white squirrel the other day, which I took as a sign that winter is coming.

Roadkill elicits an emotional response, moreso when cycling.

Was that for the new regulations for directors or PSCs of companies? It has to be done by November I believe but haven’t got round to it yet.

"Road Closed"
When it isn't. Drove (Car) somewhere 30 miles away today and having stupidly followed diversions (that only divert you away from the "Road Closed") on return journey decided to ignore the "Road Closed" signs and across entire journey there were 5 road closures some with some without diversions and on every single one there was no road closure. 4 of the 5 didn't even have roadworks and no sign of any repairs to the road surface just one where Anglian Water had screened off less than a third of the road though nobody working there.

I'm used on the bike to ignore these closures s 90% of the time there is a way through but today, in the car so many and without even roadworks.

I can appreciate signs have to go up before they actually start digging their holes but it's Friday and after lunch so no new roadworks starting.

I do love a "Road Closed" sign while out cycling. Especially so if the roads has been resurfaced.
