Seemingly trivial things that elicit an emotional response of some kind

Fair point - it was probably some supercilious arse like me who spotted an opportunity to put pedantry into profitable use.

But that doesn't undermine the point that punctuation can change meaning.

(FWIW, I usually reserve my online pedantry for 'humour' those who will know what the hell I'm on about. You can take that as a compliment, if you wish.)
Well, to be precise, since it wasn't a good example, it does in fact undermine the point.

I can argue like this all day. It's what I do for a living.

Why only last week I argued that an aperture was distinct from an opening, based upon the context in which the two terms were used.

You would have made a good lawyer.

...other than missing out the second "for" after "humour". That'd be a week's wages gone in penalties for carelessness.

Confusion today at people who, kissing by their accents, have relocated to rural Aberdeenshire and are moaning about being stranded by snow.

Tbf they could have relocated years ago for the oil industry and retained their accents and it is as bad as it's ever been.
If they are new, then it'll be an eyeopener. From the BBC.

Getting the timing just right before bedtime that I can fill the Jotul with two logs that perfectly fill the remaining space over the glowing embers, so that they'll easily last the night. I'll have kept it in for nearly three weeks this time, but my all time record was lighting it in November (one match), and letting it go out in April. Stupidly satisfying, despite how many times I've done it.

Just had a decent meal out. £12.30 each. Edge of zone 1. I'm pleased, but also intrigued.

Over egging the significance of things. I think this week we've had to re write our understanding of human evolution and the domestication of cats. Now we have to re-write our understanding of Roman Britain.

I am also irritated by the constant inappropriate comparisons to Pompeii. It's nothing like Pompeii. It's less like Pompeii than Scara Brae or Sutton Hoo. And they are nothing like Pompeii.

"A lot of archaeologists get wound up by connections made with Pompeii but I think it's in part justified because of the levels of preservation here," he said.

Did you just reply to my irritation about an academic over egging something by quoting the academic over egging it?

If he finds any bodies, preserved ornate wooden doors, traces of fast food in amphoras together with a price list and a red light district, I'll stand corrected.
