A friend of mine has a penchant for arguing on Facebóók (each to their own). He once wrote, in passing, that 49% of people were of below average intelligence, and got a furious series of responses from someone demanding to know where he got that figure from, how was it arrived at, who did the research, etc.
<offtopic>But as I posted elsewhere sometime ago, I an fortunate in that I have an above average number of legs (as do most people).</offtopic>

My prediction is that
a) They will identify the "lots of people" doing DEI jobs
and discover that it is about 3 people in HR so they will sack them
b) they will start to investigate "all the huge amounts of waste" and look for auditors to check it all out
and discover that the people qualified to do this no longer work for councils because they charge more than the councils can pay
so they will sack some people anyway such as HR people who do "nothing useful"
and in a few years time they will start to get sued for discrimination and lack of training for people in a variety of ways
which is why those people were employed in the first place
and they will save some money - but only in ways that cost more money overall
but then - I could be wrong
CLEARLY they will not be needing to go to the Government and ask for more money

So looking at the latest party stats from the Beeb:
Reform have gained 677 councillors and the Conservatives have lost 676.
Labour have lost 186 councillors and the Lib Dems have gained 183 Councillors between them.
I am thinking that Tories are voting reform and Labourites are voting Lib Dem or Green (depending on area). Some independents have also been replaced by Green or Lib Dem.
There does seem to be a maths issue on the Beeb as there are 885 gains and 882 losses overall. 3 Councillors appear to have spontaneously combusted.
In terms of councils, Reform have gained only 10 despite having many more councillors, and Lib Dems have gained 3. Tories have lost 16 and Labour only 1. 4 more are NOC.
It's actually not a particularly bad day for Labour, but a terrible one for the Conservative Party. I suspect both the Lib Dems and Greens will be happy.

(Con/Ref) 47% v 46% (Lab/Lib/Gre)
So nothing in it either way.

It's disastrous for both conservatives and Labour.
Where there is no overall control, reform still did very well.
There are many more councils that literally chickened out of having a vote this time.
Their time will likely come soon enough

Labour really has a choice: find its soul and present a positive argument as a counterpoint to Reform populism, or carry on recruiting for Reform by trying to ape its policies. If it does the latter, it's going to lose the next election.
Lib Dems - well, they ought to be filling the void for people like me, but I'm just not sure that they've got enough organisation or heft to step up to the task.

This. It will either be a load of Farage hot air like most of what he says or he’ll try and fall foul of the various laws that prevent that sort of behaviour (probably what he wants so he can show how the establishment are preventing the ‘will of the people’). If he actually goes ahead he’ll get sued and more Council’s will go bankrupt.
I’m still amazed by the amount of people, including some on here, that think jobs and rules protecting the environment/ fighting climate change is a bad thing that must be stopped.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more Tories jump ship, that will accelerate the inevitable implosion. Will Badenoch yield or go down with the ship?
