70s footballers in general were skint and needed "proper" jobs.

We had Alastair Hignell as a history teacher, who played rugby for Bristol & England in the winter, and cricket for Gloucestershire in the summer. Different times.

I was doing some research in the meantime. From the legend that is Malcolm MacDonald.
"But from 1971 to 1979, when I retired, I was paying 82.5pc tax, so even when I was on £500 a week with Arsenal I never took home more than £100."
Now think what lesser footballers were on.

I'm curious as to what those voters think local councillors are going to do about immigration?

They'll stop giving them luxury housing the minute they arrive of course, and won't allow migrant camps in their council areas.,

You are possibly thinking that logic is involved. I doubt that other than base instincts they think things through further than giving the established parties a kicking.

Hignell was on about £1000 for the season with Gloucs cricket. And rugby was still 'amateur'.

Ah. Gotcha. Thick as. When those parties get a kicking who do they think pays the price?
It really is quite concerning for the future.

The sad truth could just be that despite Mahmoud's rhetoric too many people did not believe that Labour (or the established parties) would actually do anything about illegal immigration, whereas they believe that Reform would?
You have a touching belief in the lack of racism in "white progressive voters".
You seem to have a touching belief that local elections have a lot to do with central government and political parties.

In my area it remains Lib Dem controlled. Gregor MacGregor and his magnificent tache managed a very creditable 3rd place against two very good Lib Dem councillors. Most of the elected councillors are previously elected councillors, and the few Reform councillors are former Tory Councillors I believe.

Plus ca change.

Of course it has a lot to do with central government and political parties. The names of the local parties are the same as the names of the national parties and mud sticks from the media attacks on national parties and political leaders.

As Rusty states, a large number of people use the local elections to send a message to Westminster.
They (and most on here) didn't want the Tories and still don't.
Labour got in, and they don't like Labour either now after all the U-turns and the botched efforts to achieve growth.

So what are the traditional parties going to do to regain the trust of the electorate?
That's the question and topic you should be discussing.
Not resorting to the usual Reform voters are thick trope, and Reform councils will be crap.

It's symptomatic of wealth being concentrated somewhere else, and feeling forgotten by national politics. I do understand, but these are the same people who voted leave and are now voting reform because the consequences of leaving bave been so bad. This is tempering my sympathy.

I wasn’t really thinking in terms of sympathy, I was thinking more in terms of the lack of understanding as to WHY these former Labour voters have deserted them. I doubt the Starmer’s have the faintest idea.
