"... but not the Millionaire-Politician's Wife's Clothing Allowance, obviously; the Country's endured enough austerity."
Starmer has recently confirmed he is not a millionaire. He does have some untapped wealth in terms of the house he owns and a piece of land that he owns, but he is a long way away from being as wealthy as most conservative MPs.

Probably still had enough to buy his own suits and glasses though. When Labour have spent years castigating the Tories for the same thing people are understandably disappointed that the freebies/cash for access issue is a Labour failing too.

Why the fuss? Boris and his wallpaper, Starmer and specs/clothes. Two cheeks of the same a*se.

Politicians have always had snouts in the trough. so what’s new, including the hypocrisy from both sides?

I wouldn’t be surprised if even Michael Foot had his donkey jacket sponsored by Millets.

Quick fact check. Lord Alli paid for £5000 worth of clothes. The estimate for Boris's redecoration of Downing Street was £200,000 of which £2,260 was wallpaper for one room (total wall paper came to er - just under £5,000). Lord Brownlow contributed £170,000 of the cost.

So yes, all politicians might have their "snouts in the trough" but Johnson was wallowing in it like a pig in mud, while Starmer just had a snack in comparison. Oh - and Starmer's donation was legal, he just didn't declare it in time. Johnsons was illegal and he had to pay back the donation and use his own money instead, and the Conservative party was fined for trying to pretend it didn't happen.

The prime minister reportedly approached parliamentary authorities on Tuesday to make a late declaration after being given fresh advice on what items needed to be disclosed.

A No 10 spokesperson said Sir Keir believed he had complied with the rules, but had since declared further items.
This is the difference. Someone making a mistake and declaring late vs someone trying to illegally hide a massive donation.

It might be legal, just as Johnson's wallpaper is legal, but it doesn't encourage public confidence in transparency and honesty in politics. These large private donations are rarely without strings attached whichever politician or party is the beneficiary.

Mea culpa.

After reading the facts I now realise Starmer is completely innocent of any charges of greed and loving something for nothing, and being completely innocent of not realising how taking such gifts, which he could easily afford to pay for, could look to the public and their opponents. Non declaration of donations is also something that is far too difficult for politicians to get right and done on time until they are criticised about it. I also realise comparing him to Johnson was unfair and set the bar for political and moral wrongdoing far too low.

Mea maxima culpa.

The same Lord Ali gave A Rayner a flat in New York for a week over New Year. Lammy's on telly telling us Starmer needs the money because UK PM's don't get a clothing budget. Now you've got the Scottish Greens in cash for access allegations. All this stuff is partly why people have lost faith in politics. It's not much in the big scheme of donations but it takes the p*ss when you spent the election campaign telling us you were different to the Tories and their cronyism.

Starmer didn't really spend the election campaign saying anything really, which was probably wise because what he's had to do would have got ripped to bits in the election campaign.

Whatever is being chucked at Labour (and other parties) is so small time it's almost not worth the effort. It's kind of sad that this is the political landscape we live in these days.

I think that's a little unfair. They are clearly different in that Labour ministers have no conception of how large a backhander you can get. It takes a Tory to charge expenses for moat maintenance.

If they can't even get that right how on earth can they be expected to run the economy?

The mode figure for serial liar Starmer's personal worth seems to be £7.7 million.
Untapped? Snort! If it doesn't count unless it's "on tap" sitting in change in that bowl in the hallway with the car keys, the hearing aid batteries and the widget for opening the gas meter box, then there are no millionaires.
