How silly of Starmer not to plan for this 10 years ago.

Indeed, how silly of all our Politicians, it may not be Starmer's "fault" but making announcements of plans/ambitions which cannot possibly be met will not rectify that.UK struggled to build a few ferries for the Scottish Islands, so, I doubt 12 attack submarines are plausible, regardless of the finances.

Welcome yourself into the new modern crisis
A lot of supposition there but no real facts.

So you don't think that there are any economic migrants coming over on boats? For info, in 2022 the largest numbers of illegal migrants were originally from the war torn country Albania. And come to think of it, most illegal immigrants are coming directly from France, which is perfectly safe (apart from maybe Paris after the PSG win last weekend).

High speed intercept craft

And once they have intercepted, what do you propose to do?

Drag the biggers back to France ^_^
Which highlights how lirttle people understand about boats. How does a high speed craft (or any craft) "turn them back"? Even speed past them a bit close and you'll swamp and sink then ... at best a resuce mission (which means bringing them back to UK), more likely several deaths.

It;s not as easy as Reform seem to think. Greek coastguards in court at the moment after alledgedly trying to tow/rescue a migrant boat than sank https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8yjlzd3pvo.

Easy to say "turn them back" but totally impractical and unachievable even with "High speed boats".

When I was sailing offshore racing yacht, once UK Customs rib (high speed boat) tried to stop us but we were racing at the time ... so we ended having a shouting match and continued without stopping and were were perfectly safe, perfectly stable, just didn't want to even slow let alone stop.

And Defence Secretary John Healey saying it's a "message to Moscow" (his words) ... the message seems to be "we can't actually afford to defend ourselves but we have an ambition to to some degree at some point in the future, probably many years ahead and then only if our economy does well".

Don't spoil it - I'm waiting for @CXRAndy's master plan.

If they boat doesn't stop the military would be allowed to open fire to force it to stop. This would be a national emergency situation. It would be taken to a larger vessel and all occupants returned back to France. A couple of months would see crossings dwindle to zero. Worked in Australia, can work here, just needs a government with backbone

The Albanians have dropped right down now due to work done with the Albanian government.

The fact is that most asylum seekers arriving on small boats need asylum. 948,000 people arrived in the UK in 2024 of which 37,000 people arrived in small boats.

Whilst swivel eyed loons like Andy fiddle off into their cornflakes about small boats and the evils of rescuing desperate people, the fact is that the desperate people make up 3% of immigration. Farage and his moronic following love to demonise those that need help instead of focusing on legal immigration which is arguably where the "we haven't got space" brigade should be focusing their attention.

Those asylum seekers are the demographic most likely to inject money into the economy. They are desperate and willing to work. They have no choice but to try and make a better life and the evidence is that they work extremely hard to do so. They don't come here for free accommodation and food, they come here to earn money. Which means paying tax. Which boosts the economy.

Unfortunately Starmer seems to think that winning votes by pretending to be reform lite is more important than looking after the country

Erm, I asked "So you don't think that there are any economic migrants coming over on boats?" (relevant word in italics). You replied with a link saying that there was no evidence that the majority were economic migrants - which clearly means that quite a few are, even if they aren't a majority. So I think you have just agreed with my point...

And as mentioned above, most are coming from France which is a safe country. So why do they need to come here? They are not in mortal danger where they set off from.

As for 'boosting the economy', we want to do that with people coming here that we want to come here and/or have a valuable skillset. The majority of small boat arrivals will be either on benefits or will do low paid, unskilled work, so will overall be a cost to the taxpayer.

Over £1bn per month or was it a week in benefits to foreigners.
