The court granted Epping Council an injunction requiring the owners of the Bell Hotel and by implication the Home Office contractor that placed Asylum Seekers there to remove them by early next month.

What HMG will do next is open to conjecture.

The owners of the Bell may appeal.

It was also a specific issue that the hotel hadn't notified the planning authority of the change of use.

I'm struggling to understand why the Tories are so against hotels being used for housing asylum seekers when the numbers rose hugely under their Government to a peak in September 2023. Apparently the Rwanda 'deterent' that detered no-one, cost at least £290 million and resulted in 4 asylum seekers leaving voluntarily should be brought back at once. They must think everyone has amnesia and doesn't realise that the increase in numbers is largely a result of their policies over 14 years together with a failure to fund a functioning asylum determination process or build suitable accommodation for those awaiting a decision. Unfortunately there are large numbers who do seem to have this amnesia.

I'm also stuck as to where these people, that are already in the country, are supposed to be housed. I doubt giving them priority access to social housing will go down well with those who don't want them in hotels. Tents in the local parks or high streets?

It's the way politics operates these days. New leader means "clean slate" and nothing same party did day before new leader has anything to do with same party day after new leader. Same applies even when new leader was member of cabinet and very involed in those decisions they now argue were a disaster.

And they expect our regard and respect ...

I fail to see this as a solution. It's just moving the problem elsewhere.
Until they replace or fix the system to make it much, much faster there will be no end.

It seems reasonably obvious that unless and until the rate of processing exceeds to rate of arrival, the problem will not diminish, obvious that is except to our Politicians.

It also seems reasonably obvious that climate change is going to exacerbate the issue. Faster processing is definitely required, and surely the Civil Service can make good use of all their egalitarian future intake to aid this!

I suspect it is seen as a solution by Epping for Epping 'cos it will move what they are regarding as a problem out of their area - so no longer their problem.

It is sounding like the court decision was quite specific to the circumstances in Epping and maybe for legal experts to assess how applicable it would to other council areas.

But from Councillors perspective I guess they will probably gain far more votes than they lose by trying it.

Just more disappointing attitudes from UK.

Re: Epping: Daft thing is in interviews with Epping protestors many say "We don't know who these people are". Daft as eg if I purchased or rented somewhere in Epping and moved to the area they wouldn't know who I was either. Do I need permission from locals before moving there? Am I required to submit two forms of acceptable ID and a recent utility bill so they "know who I am"?

They are talking about another level of unknowns

No ID, no indication, if they are a terrorist, rapist, murderer, doctor, engineer, socially westernised. They all throw their papers in the sea.

Your history would be known being a UK born citizen
